The aim of the course is to concentrate on the development of English medical terminology. The following topics will be discussed:
- the origins of medicine;
- types of medical texts (from manuscripts to printed texts);
- multilingualism in early medical texts;
- the origins and development of English medical terms;
- a rivalry between foreign and native terms;
- translations of early medical texts;
- first medical dictionaries;
- English medical terminology today (specialized terms, medical slang)
