Translation of texts related to EU law and international law (C language) - French 3200-M2-1TUMCF
The workshop is devoted to learning how to translate texts on legal, legal and legislative (EU) topics from French into Polish and from Polish to French.
The subject of the translation are various types of texts - for example: written questions (European Parliament), ECtHR case law, press releases from various international institutions, UN resolutions, summary of court cases.
In the case of the translated text, potentially probable assignments or actual projects are discussed, which allows the student to properly evaluate and select the translation techniques and methods.
Course content:
- translation of short and longer specialist and para-specialist texts (e.g. press, popular science, opinions, combining specialist and colloquial) from French into Polish and Polish into French
- specificity of specialist translation in the field
- deepening knowledge about translation strategies
- analysis of existing translations of texts in a given field
- proper selection of dictionaries, sources and analogous and parallel texts
- teaching proper habits in using sources such as electronic term databases or websites of various institutions
- presenting the institution and its position in the legal world
- analysis of texts issued by institutions
- matching the translation to the recipient
- the problem of arbitrary compensation and paraphrase in specialist texts, borrowings and native terms
- using CAT
The texts and vocabulary relate to examples of topics in the field of European Union law and the international B and A language area, such as:
- European Parliament, commission, directives
- judiciary, case law
- constitution and legislation, codes, national laws, international conventions
- international disputes, human rights,
- international organizations

Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student:
KNOWLEDGE
- knows the methods and techniques of translating texts in the field;
- knows the specifics of specialist translation in the field;
- knows the sources and methods of searching for terminology and knowledge about translations;
- knows the basic vocabulary in the field and the most common types of texts in this area;
SKILLS
- introduced to CAT
- can prepare a translation in accordance with the received order;
- can indicate the type of text and adapt the translation methods to it;
- knows how to specify the target recipient of the translation and his knowledge and expectations;
- knows how to assess possible translation functions and adapt them to the task: purpose, new recipient and new communication situation;
- knows how to solve problems regarding errors and stylistic deficiencies of the original, the limits of translation deviations from the original, terminology and graphic form;
- can evaluate different versions of the translation depending on the translation function;
- recognizes the most important translation problems of texts in the fields in A and B;
- knows how to recognize and evaluate cultural elements, non-translated, quotes and references, as well as stylistic issues;
- can use various translation techniques and strategies, depending on the function of the text;
- knows how to edit correct linguistically, stylistically and pragmatically texts in Polish;
- knows how to use parallel texts (especially when translating into a foreign language), dictionaries, the internet and other sources;
- can justify and critically assess their own translation choices;
SOCIAL COMPETENCE
- has a habit of verifying their own translations after they have been written and on a regular basis during the translation;
- applies the principles of professional ethics of a translator, is timely and aware of formal and ethical requirements at work in the profession.

Continuous assessment based on:
1. attendance and activity in classes,
2. write and pass the final test or written translation;
3. current preparation for classes - independent performance of written translations;
4. translations given and evaluated during the semester
