Translation of specialised texts – teacher’s choice (C language) - Spanish 3200-M2-1TSACH
The aim of the course is to develop techniques and fluency in the written translation of specialized texts from a foreign language into Polish and from Polish into a foreign language.
Students deepen their knowledge of specialized terminology across various areas of culture and refine their translation skills through independent translation practice, self-editing, commentary on their translation choices, and analysis of both their own work and that of their peers.

COURSE CONTENT:
-in-depth study of translation techniques and strategies using examples of specialized texts;
-analysis of texts representing various genres
-specific challenges of translating cultural texts: terminology work, dealing with foreign, individual, and native terms;
-stylistic challenges;
-pragmatic issues (audience needs and client requirements as criteria shaping the translation project);
-appropriate selection and use of dictionaries, reference sources, and parallel texts;
-fostering a professional approach to simulated translation assignments and clients, in accordance with translator’s ethics.
TEXT TOPICS:
Specialized texts selected by the instructor based on the dominant areas of translation in the relevant linguistic and cultural context.
TEXT TYPES:
-scientific and scholarly writings;
-architecture;
-guides;
FORMS OF WORK:
-analysis of published translations;
-independently prepared translations discussed in class, as well as translations completed during class sessions;
-teamwork involving various roles (project management, terminology work, translation, editing, and proofreading);
-preparation of glossaries in specific fields;
-self-editing exercises.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student:
KNOWLEDGE:
- properly qualifies the type of text (K1_W02);
- knows appropriate translation strategies and techniques tailored to the needs of specialized translations (K1_U01, K1_U10 );
- takes account of cultural differences and their consequences for translation (K1_W10, K1_W11);
- knows the rules of professional translator's ethics (K1_W13);
- is generally familiar with the rules of cooperation with editors, publishers, consultants, etc. (K1_W15).
SKILLS:
- can analyze the text in terms of pragmatics and choose the appropriate method of translation (K1_U01, K1_U10 );
- is able to select specialized dictionary and text sources and use them (K1_U01, K1_U10 );
- translates texts correctly, in a clear and transparent way, which may involve the use of creativity (K1_U01, K1_U08, K1_U09,
K1_U10 K1_U12);
- can justify the choice of strategies and techniques (K1_U04);
- is able to determine the target reader as well as to adjust the translation to the reader's needs of the reader and to the
client's requirements t (K1_U01, K1_U02 K1_U03, K1_U04 K1_U10);
- is able to correct another person's translation as well as their own translation (K1_U08, K1_U09).
SOCIAL COMPETENCE:
- can work independently and in a team (K1_K06, K1_K07);
- is able to participate in a discussion about translation, and find solutions to translation problems with a team (K1_K02).
- is able to meet the standards of professional ethics (K1_K06).
Assessment criteria
Continuous rating based on:
- presence, preparation for classes and activities, participation;
- punctuality;
- independent work (including preparation during the semester of the required number of translations with autocorrection including the group leader / comments, preparation of glossaries);
- satisfactory execution of assignments;
- a positive grade on all partial tests (the student is entitled to one resit of each test);
- the end of the semester credit (in the form of a colloquium checking the knowledge of lexis of translated texts, translation of assigned text).
Criteria for translation evaluation:
Translations are interpreted in the aspect of translation and pragmatic, linguistic and formal.

75%-71% - 3,5
70%-60% - 3

The form and conditions of resits are the same as those for course credits obtained at the usual time, unless it is impossible due to organizational reasons (in such a case, the form of obtaining the course credit may change).
Two absences are allowed. (If the limit is exceeded, the student should ask the teacher for compensation assignments; if the number of absences exceeds 50%, the student fails the course in accordance with the Rules of Study).
Bibliography
Compulsory literature is not required to pass the subject.
We use single and bilingual dictionaries, language dictionaries. Polish, lexicons and encyclopedias, analogical texts, language corpora.
