Full description:
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the specificity of specialized translation from English into Polish and/or from Polish into English, and to develop techniques and proficiency in this field.
Students analyze translations, deepen their knowledge of translation strategies and techniques, and improve their translation skills by preparing translations individually or in teams, self-correcting, and commenting on the solutions used.
Student workload:
Classes: 30 hours.
Independent preparation for classes: approx. 30 hours.
Total: approx. 60 hours,
which corresponds to 2 ECTS points.
COURSE CONTENT:
- theoretical aspects of specialized translation and their practical implications;
- the specificity of specialized translation and its impact on the choice of translation strategies and techniques;
- the selection of dictionaries, sources, and parallel texts;
- adjusting the translation to the recipient;
- preparing glossaries in the subject area;
- developing a professional approach to simulated assignments and clients.
TOPICS:
Includes, among others, the translation of specialized texts on topics depending on the instructor and the profile of the group – scientific or literary.
TYPES OF TEXTS:
- specialized and quasi-specialized texts (e.g., excerpts from scientific monographs, scientific articles, popular science articles; excerpts from literary texts – contemporary novels, short stories and their translations, documentaries, audio interviews)
FORMS OF WORK:
analysis of existing translations,
- translations of short and longer specialized and quasi-specialied texts prepared individually and discussion about them, followed by an attempt to find the optimal solution in terms of the specificity, function, and projected readers of the text;
- teamwork taking into account different roles (translation – editing and proofreading);
- self-correction exercises.
The resit exam takes place in the same form and under the same conditions as the regular exam, unless this is not possible for organizational reasons (in which case the form of the exam may change).
If it is not possible to conduct classes in a stationary form, classes will be held using remote communication tools, most likely Google Meet and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.

After completing the course, the student:
KNOWLEDGE:
- properly qualifies the type of text (K1_W02);
- knows appropriate translation strategies and techniques tailored to the needs of specialized translations;
- takes account of cultural differences and their consequences for translation (K1_W10, K1_W11);
- knows the rules of professional translator's ethics (K1_W13);
- is generally familiar with the rules of cooperation with editors, publishers, consultants, etc. (K1_W15).
SKILLS:
- can analyze the text in terms of pragmatics and choose the appropriate method of translation (K1_U01, K1_U10 );
- is able to select specialized dictionary and text sources and use them (K1_U01, K1_U10 );
- translates texts correctly, in a clear and transparent way, which may involve the use of creativity (K1_U01, K1_U08, K1_U09, K1_U10 K1_U12);
- can justify the choice of strategies and techniques (K1_U04);
- is able to determine the target reader as well as to adjust the translation to the reader's needs of the reader and to the client's requirements t (K1_U01, K1_U02 K1_U03, K1_U04 K1_U10);
- is able to correct another person's translation as well as their own translation (K1_U08, K1_U09).
SOCIAL COMPETENCE:
- can work independently and in a team (K1_K06, K1_K07);
- is able to participate in a discussion about translation, and find solutions to translation problems with a team (K1_K02).
- is able to meet the standards of professional ethics (K1_K06).
Assessment criteria
Continuous rating based on:
- presence, preparation for classes and activities;
- independent work (including preparation during the semester of the required number of translations with autocorrect including the group leader / comments, preparation of glossaries);
- the end of the semester credit (in the form of a colloquium checking the knowledge of lexis of translated texts).
Criteria for translation evaluation:
Translations are interpreted in the aspect of translation and pragmatic, linguistic and formal.

Two absences are allowed. (If the limit is exceeded, the student should ask the teacher for compensation assignments; if the number of absences exceeds 50%, the student fails the course).
