Translation of science- and technology-related texts (C language) - English: 30 hour workshop. Direction of translation: C to A and A to C.
The workshop continues for one term and is devoted to the translation of popular science and scientific texts (excerpts of articles and longer publications) as well as technology-related texts (e.g. manuals, descriptions of standards, procedures, equipment, materials, etc.) from B language (English) to A language (Polish) using computers and electronic tools for translators, including Internet and CAT tools.
Teaching content:
- the specificity of specialized, scientific and technical, translation;
- translation strategies applied in scientific and technical translation;
- editing the translated text (continuation);
- appropriate selection of (mono- and bilingual) dictionaries, references as well as similar and parallel texts (in Polish and English) and the assessment of their credibility and the value of equivalents they provide;
- the role of glossaries in scientific and technical translation;
- the issue of adapting the translation to the recipient;
- the problem of borrowings and source text terms in scientific and technology-related texts;
- the role of visual (and audiovisual) documentation in technical translation;
- the advantages and limitations of electronic tools for translators, including CAT tools, in scientific and technical translation;
- the ethics of scientific and technical translator;
- most frequent scientific and technical translation errors .
Student workload:
30 class hours;
30 hours of preparation for classes;
Total 60 hours = 2 ECTS.
Topics of the translated texts:
Science and technology
LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
- preparing (individual or team) translations as home assignment and presenting them for discussion in class;
- discussing different versions of individual and/or team translations;
- translating short texts in class;
- working in a team and performing different roles;
- analyzing parallel texts;
- analyzing the samples of erroneous translations;
- working with term bases and other terminology resources;
- preparing glossaries (using electronic tools for translators, including CAT tools, e.g. Trados TermBase);
- preparing individual or team translation projects;
- translating in class using CAT software (MemoQ or Trados).
If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the University.
Learning methods: activating methods (didactic discussion, brainstorming); programmed methods (using a computer); project work; production-oriented exercises.

After completing the course, the student in terms of:
KNOWLEDGE:
- knows and properly uses specialized vocabulary and collocations sufficient for correct scientific and technical translation;
- has basic knowledge concerning scientific and technical translation;
- knows the strategies and techniques of scientific and technical translation;
- knows the specificity of scientific and technical translation.
SKILLS:
- correctly qualifies text types;
- is able to apply appropriate translation strategies in practice and justify their choice;
- is able to select specialized dictionary and text sources, assess their value and use them;
- is able to produce correct and comprehensible translations of specialized and general texts form a given discipline;
- is able to justify and critically evaluate own translation choices;
- is able to proofread his/her own translation;
- possesses the skill of self-correction;
- is able to prepare correct graphical form of translated texts;
- is able to create a glossary;
- possesses the basic skill of using a CAT program (is able to create and carry out a translation project with a translation memory and a glossary, preserve the original formatting of translated texts, perform quality check, export target texts in a given format to a designated place).
SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
- can be trusted to perform tasks in a reliable manner;
- complies with formal and ethical requirements specific to the market of scientific and technical translations (reliability, timeliness, confidentiality, etc.);
- has improved the ability to work in a team (e.g. by participating in a translation project).
Assessment criteria
Continuous assessment based on:
- attendance,
- preparation (written and oral) for classes,
- quality of work in class,
- passing the final translation.
Each requirement must be fulfilled independently; hence, their share in the final mark is not determined.
Evaluation criteria for written assignments and a final translation:
99% -100 - 5!
98% - 91% - 5
90% - 86% - 4,5
85% - 76% - 4
75% - 71% - 3.5
70% - 60% - 3
less - 2 (fail)
Criteria for evaluating a translation written on the retake term are the same as above.
Criteria concerning attendance:
There are 2 absences allowed . Excessive absences may have a negative impact on the final grade and result in failure to pass the course.
