Translation of science- and technology-related texts (B language) - Spanish 3200-M2-1TNTBH
One-term workshops devoted to teaching translation of legal and economics-related texts.
Teaching content:
- translation of specialised and quasi-specialised texts, of various length (e.g. press articles, scientific texts for the general public, combining specialised and colloquial language); language directions B/C into A and A into B/C
- intricacies of specialised translation in a given discipline
- deepening the knowledge about translation strategies
- analysis of existing translations from a given discipline
- appropriate selection of dictionaries, sources, as well as similar and parallel texts
- preparation of glossaries in a given discipline
- adapting translation to the recipient
- problems related to freedom of compensation and paraphrase in specialised texts, borrowings and native terms

-use their theoretical knowledge of translation studies to solve complex problems in translation by creatively interpreting the source text, selecting appropriate sources (e.g. industry dictionaries, glossaries, corpora), and to adequately assess

-use their knowledge of translation studies by selecting the right tools in the translation process, including advanced information and communication technologies such as CAT tools, machine translation and post-editing. S1_U02
-use knowledge of research methodologies used in contemporary translation studies to plan and conduct methodologically sound research in the field of translation, analyse its results and determine its implications. S1_U03
-translate various types of texts from languages B and C into their native language (language A) and from their native language (language A) into language B (and C), recognise the type of text being translated and translate it into the target language, selecting appropriate equivalents that are relevant to the given social context. S1_U04
-communicate on translation-related topics with clients, institutions and translation recipients in a manner that is understandable to non-specialists, and justify the decisions made and translation strategies used. S1_U05
-lead a discussion on translation, understood as both a process and a product, taking into account different points of view and the latest results of translation research. S1_U06
-independently plan and implement their own lifelong learning thanks to their knowledge of various translation-related centres and sources that can be used to improve their translation skills. S1_U08

- knows the relevant scope of specialised terminology and collocations allowing for translating a simple finance- and banking-related text in a correct way and can properly use the terminology and collocations
- has the fundamental knowledge regarding translations of finance- and banking-related texts
- knows strategies and techniques of translating finance- and banking-related texts
- knows the intricacies of translating finance- and banking-related texts
SKILLS:
- can adequately recognise different text types
- can apply appropriate translation strategies and justify the choice
- can select and use specialised sources such as dictionaries and texts
- is able to detect idiomatic character in the text and translate it
- correctly translates specialised and non-specialised texts from a given discipline in an understandable and clear manner
- can justify and evaluate own translation decisions
- possesses the skill of self-correction
- is able to prepare correct graphical form of translated texts
- is able to prepare a glossary
- is able to use the basics of CAT software (setting up a project, translating, exporting documents)
SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
- demonstrates responsible attitude to assigned tasks
- meets the formal and ethical requirements specific for the market of finance- and banking-related translations (reliability, timeliness, confidentiality, etc.)
- mastered teamwork (e.g. in a translation project)
Assessment criteria
Continuous assessment based on:
- attendance: 2 unexcused absences are allowed
- preparation for classes, quality of work in class;
- translations prepared individually, including those prepared using CAT software;
- timeliness of submitting the assigned tasks;
- mid-term tests checking the knowledge of terminology;
- preparation of glossaries;
- passing the final written test and / or translation.
Assessment criteria:
- attendance: 2 absences allowed;
- the quality of works and tests: the scale given below;
- timeliness - criteria given by the lecturer in the syllabus.
. The second-term credit shall follow the same rules and form as the first-term credit, unless this is not technically possible.
