Localisation B language - Spanish 3200-M2-1LOKBH
The purpose of the course is to teach students the skills and abilities within the field of localising various types of content translated from Spanish into Polish and from Polish into Spanish, with a special emphasis on the localisation of computer software and websites carried out using CAT tools.
Topics of classes:
1) Theoretical part
a. Localisation and transcreation versus translation
b. Characteristics of the localisation process
c. Types of localisation, their specificities and localising strategies that they employ
- computer software, user’s guides and other technical texts
- products’ descriptions, sales materials and other marketing texts
- documents, procedures and other texts of a legal nature
- websites
- computer games
- multimedia
- other types of texts and materials
d. Tools used in localisation (including CAT programmes)
2) Practical part
e. Introduction into the selected software (e.g. CAT programme)
f. Group localisation project
- translation and verification
- localisation testing
- reporting and fixing bugs
Didactic methods:
- theoretical presentations and practical exercises within the field of localisation
- participation in a semestral localisation project
- localisations (individual and group) performed as classwork and homework, among others by means of CAT tools (presentation of one short translation performed as homework)
- discussion of own and others’ localisations (assessment of the adequacy of the translation and the localisation strategies adopted)
- analysis of source texts and localisation errors
- presentation and analysis of different technical aspects of localisation
- preparation of alignments, translation memories, dictionaries and terminological databases using CAT tools
- short control tests on the vocabulary learned during the classes (optional)
Students’ workload:
- 30 contact hours in the classroom (1 ECTS)
- 30 hours of independent work outside the classroom (1 ECTS)
- 60 hours in total (2 ECTS)

Learning outcomes
Developing competences indispensable within localisation of various types of content translated from Spanish into Polish and from Polish into Spanish (especially for localising computer software and websites by means of CAT tools).
After completing the course, students:
- know various types of localisation, their specificities and the localising strategies that they employ
- understand basic issues and problems within the field of localisation, especially in the context of the Polish and Spanish cultural area
- can localise various types of content from Spanish into Polish and from Polish into Spanish (especially computer software and websites by means of CAT tools)
Assessment criteria
Requirements and evaluation criteria:
- attendance at the classes
- active participation in the classes
- ongoing preparation for the classes (presentation of one localisation performed as homework)
- participation in a semestral localisation project
- continuous evaluation of the localisations performed
- preparation of alignments, translation memories, dictionaries and terminological databases by means of CAT tools
- passing the lexical control tests (optional)
Grading scale for localisation works:
- 0-60% - unsatisfactory
- >60-70% - satisfactory
- >70-75% - satisfactory plus
- >75-85% - good
- >85-90% - good plus
- >90-100% - very good
Attendance check:
- students are entitled to three unjustified absences per semestre
- three latenesses of more than fifteen minutes are considered as an additional absence
