Localisation B language - French 3200-M2-1LOKBF
The purpose of the course is to teach students the skills and abilities within the field of localising various types of content translated from French into Polish and from Polish into French, with a special emphasis on the localisation of computer software and websites carried out using CAT tools.
Topics of classes:
1) Theoretical part
a. Localisation and transcreation versus translation
b. Characteristics of the localisation process
c. Types of localisation, their specificities and localising strategies that they employ
- computer software, user’s guides and other technical texts
- products’ descriptions, sales materials and other marketing texts
- documents, procedures and other texts of a legal nature
- websites
- computer games
- multimedia
- other types of texts and materials
d. Tools used in localisation (including CAT programmes)
2) Practical part
e. Introduction into the selected software (e.g. CAT programme)
f. Group localisation project
- translation and verification
- localisation testing
- reporting and fixing bugs
Didactic methods:
- theoretical presentations and practical exercises within the field of localisation
- participation in a semestral localisation project
- localisations (individual and group) performed as classwork and homework, among others by means of CAT tools (presentation of translation performed as homework)
- discussion of own and others’ localisations (assessment of the adequacy of the translation and the localisation strategies adopted)
- analysis of source texts and localisation errors
- presentation and analysis of different technical aspects of localisation
- preparation of alignments, translation memories, dictionaries and terminological databases using CAT tools
- short control tests on the vocabulary learned during the classes (optional)
Students’ workload:
- 30 contact hours in the classroom (1 ECTS)
- 30 hours of independent work outside the classroom (1 ECTS)
- 60 hours in total (2 ECTS)

Learning outcomes
Developing competences indispensable within localisation of various types of content translated from French into Polish and from Polish into French (especially for localising computer software and websites by means of CAT tools).
After completing the course, students:
KNOWLEDGE:
- know the specialist terminology of localisation (K_W03);
- have an in-depth knowledge of the role of language in the communication between people and cultures (in particular in the context of the Polish and French language areas), various types of localisation, their specificity and the localisation strategies (K_W08);
- have an in-depth understanding of localisation-related problems in the context of verious forms of entrepreneurship on the translation market (K_W10);
SKILLS:
- can perform text analysis with a view to its localisation in order to identify potential challenges, including those related to culture-bound elements, and address them accordingly (K_U02);
- can localise various types of content from French to Polish and from Polish to French (in particular software and websites with CAT tools), using appropriately researched, analysed, evaluated and selected information in the native language and in foreign languages K_U03);
- can communicative in native and foreign languages in localisation-related professional situations with experts, using verious communication channels, techniques, and strategies (K_U05);
- can formulate an assessment of the correctness and relevance of localisation, taking into consideration technical, linguistic, and cultural aspects (K_U06);
- can cooperate and work in a group in the context of a localisation project, assuming various roles and assigning tasks (K_U08);
KOMPETENCJE SPOŁECZNE:
- are prepared to adequately identify and resolve communication problems in the context of localisation (K_K02);
- are prepared to work as language mediators in the context of localisation in compliance with the professional ethics principles, taking into consideration various needs of the localisation process agents (K_K04);
- are prepared to recognize the importance of knowledge in resolving localisation-related problems, and of seeking experts' opinions (K_K05);
- are prepared to use research-based cirteria for the evaluation of various types of localisation (K_K06).
Assessment criteria
Requirements and evaluation criteria:
- attendance at the classes
- active participation in the classes
- ongoing preparation for the classes (presentation of localisations performed as homework)
- participation in a semestral localisation project
- continuous evaluation of the localisations performed
- preparation of alignments, translation memories, dictionaries and terminological databases by means of CAT tools
- passing the lexical control tests (optional)
Validation during the resit examination session is allowed if the attendance criterion is fulfilled and consists of performing localisation tasks assigned by the teacher.
Grading scale for localisation works:
- 0-60% - unsatisfactory
- >60-70% - satisfactory
- >70-75% - satisfactory plus
- >75-85% - good
- >85-90% - good plus
- >90-100% - very good
Attendance check:
- Students are entitled to two absences per semester.
- Three cases of arriving more than fifteen minutes late are considered as an additional absence.
- If the absence limit is exceeded, additional tasks, assigned by the teacher, are required.
- Absence to more than 50% of classes results in a failing grade for the course.
