Modern trends in literary research 3200-M2-0WTBL
The program of the course contains issues related to the development of the theory of literature at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. The course assumes developing critical skills while reading theoretical texts and reflecting on their contents. It is important to understand how and to what extent the discussed issues can be used in the preparation of the theoretical part of the Master's thesis on literature or literary translation. In addition, students should broaden their knowledge of terminology of the theory of literature and learn how to use it.
Classes are in the form of a seminar. Therefore, students are encouraged to actively participate in discussions, search for materials dealing with issues of their own interests and prepare papers or presentations.
The course covers the following issues: (lecturers conducting classes in particular language groups should modify them taking into account the tradition specific to a given cultural area.)
1. Structuralism in literary studies
2. Problems of the sociology of literature
3. Comparative literary studies
4. Deconstructionism
5. Poststructuralism
6. Cultural turn in literary studies
7. Feminism, gender, queer in literary studies
8. Postcolonial approach in literary studies
Student workload (2 ECTS):
Participation in classes (30 hours) - 1 ECTS
Independent reading and analyzing texts (15 hours), preparation of a presentation or paper (5 hours), preparation for the final test (5 hours) - 1 ECTS
If the course cannot be conducted in class, it will be run via online communication tools recommended by the University of Warsaw, such
as GoogleMeet.

- knows the terminology of Literary Studies (K2_W04);
- has knowledge about methods used in Literary Studies (K2_W08);
- knows the main directions of the development of contemporary Literary Studies (K2_W06);
- knows and understands the connections between Literary Studies and related philological and humanistic fields (K2_W12);
within the field of SKILLS:
- can use the obtained knowledge to conduct research in the field of Literary Studies and choose appropriate research methodologies
(K2_U02, K2_U06);
- can broaden their knowledge in the field of Literary Studies and expand their knowledge about other disciplines when it is necessary in
research work - independently or under the guidance of the lecturer (K2_U12);
- can discuss theoretical texts in the field of literary theory and refer to them critically (K2_U04);
within the field of SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
- appreciates the significance of knowledge in solving cognitional and practical problems and in seeking expert advice (K2_K05);
- appreciates the importance of the latest developments in the field and of critical evaluation of information (K2_K01);
- continuously and actively takes part in cultural activities via traditional and modern media (K2_K03).
Assessment criteria
Continuous assessment based on active participation in class and preparation for classes - 35%
Preparation of a paper or presentation (alone or in a group) or control tests - 35%
Written test (obligatory) or semester paper - 30%
The final grade:
99% – 100% – 5!
98% – 91% – 5
90% – 86% – 4,5
85% – 76% – 4
75% – 71% – 3,5
70% – 60% – 3
0-59% - 2
The rules for the assessment of the final test – as above.
Two absences are allowed.
A student who will be absent for more than two meetings without a doctor's leave will not be allowed to take the final test and therefore will fail the course.
Any student who will miss more than two meetings must agree with the lecturer on the conditions for catching up.
