MA Seminar, German 3200-M2-0SEMN
During this course students will learn in an advanced way about the fields in which they could write their MA-Thesis (didactics of teaching foreign languages, linguistics, translation and literary studies). Students will develop both the techniques of academic writing as well as their ability to read and understand scientific texts in a foreign language. The course engages students also to work further on selected topics and the research methodology in one of the four disciplines mentioned above. The course is designed to develop their research interests in regard to the chosen thesis subject. The program is realized in German and each student is invited to actively participate in the classes by preparing at least one presentation on a given theoretical theme and thesis subject.
The main goal of the course is to develop students’ research skills and knowledge in order to allow them to prepare a complex Ma-thesis. Students` task will be to read selected texts concerning issues of didactics of teaching foreign languages, linguistics, translation and literary studies. At the end of this course students should have a completed MA-thesis.
Student`s workload:
60 hrs – classroom activities (2 ECTS)
120 hrs – reading and analyzing texts (4 ECTS)
450 hrs – preparing and completing the MA Thesis (15 ECTS)

The student is expected to:
KNOWLEDGE:
- have in-depth knowledge of a subject and methodological specificity in the field of applied linguistics (including Methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages and Translation studies), and literary studies, which they are able to develop and creatively use in further professional activities
- know the extended terminology of applied linguistics (including Methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages and Translation studies) and literary studies
-have structured, in-depth general knowledge, including terminology, theories and methodology in the field of applied linguistics (including Methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages and Translation studies), and literary studies
- have in-depth knowledge of the links between applied linguistics (including Methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages and Translation studies), and literary studies with other fields of science and scientific disciplines, allowing integration of perspectives appropriate for several scientific disciplines
-have detailed knowledge of contemporary achievements, centers and research schools including selected areas of applied linguistics (including Methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages and Translation studies) and literary studies
- know and understand advanced methods of analysis, interpretation, valuation and problematization of various products of culture relevant to selected approaches, theories or research schools, in the field of applied linguistics (including Methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages and Translation studies), and literary studies
SKILLS
- be able to search, analyze, evaluate, select and integrate information from various sources and formulate on this basis critical judgments in the field of applied linguistics (including Methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages and Translation studies) as well as literary studies
- be able to apply advanced research skills including: analysis of research works of other authors, synthesis of various ideas and views, selection of methods and construction of research tools, elaboration and presentation of results, able to find decisions for complex problems in applied linguistics (including Methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages and Translation studies) and literary studies
- be able to acquire knowledge and broaden their research skills and undertake autonomous activities aimed at improving their further professional career building
- be able to apply critical analysis and interpretation of various types of cultural products using original approaches, taking into account new achievements in applied linguistics (including Methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages and Translation studies) and literary studies; able to determine their meanings, social impact and place in historical and cultural processes
- be able to formulate critical opinions about cultural products based on linguistic knowledge and experience and to present critical studies in various formats and modes.

- can properly define the priorities for the implementation of a task set by themselves and/or others

- take an active part in the cultural life of the region, country and/or Europe, realizing holistic and dynamic nature of culture as a phenomenon.
Assessment criteria
In order to get credits students are requested to:
attend classes (two absences are allowed)
and write 40 pages on one of the discussed topics at the end of the first term and the whole thesis at the end of the second semester
If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the University.
