Communicative Competence Development of Language B -Spanish 3200-M1-DKKBH
The course concerns principles of academic discourse and is aimed at students who are preparing to write their master's thesis in Spanish. The aim is to improve the text comprehension skills and to formulate oral and written work in an academic style, in Spanish.
During the course, linguistic and communicative competences are improved from level C1 to level C2 according to the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
1. reading and listening comprehension exercises -
commentary on academic texts;
2. working with sources: creating, organising, and gathering bibliographies; citing, paraphrasing and synthesising sources (evaluative summaries, contrastive summaries);
3. review and practise the use of academic language in speaking and writing;
4. academic vocabulary and formal grammatical structures;
5. expressing attitudes and opinions in a manner appropriate to academic style;
6. teaching the organisation of an academic text, according to recommended, widely-used rhetorical models - emphasis on the thesis as a genre of academic work (i.e., not expository, opinionated, etc.);
7. developing the ability to incorporate sources into arguments;
8. to develop oral presentation skills for sources and research papers;
9. effective oral presentations of students' research ideas;
10. discussing students' written work (peer evaluation of text samples, individual consultations with the instructor).
The subject comprises 30 teaching hours per year in the classroom, and requires a significant amount of independent
work on the part of the students:
- 30 contact hours,
- 70 hours of students' own work (reading texts, creating oral presentations and written work, preparing for exams),
total: 100 hours.
If it is not possible to conduct classes in an on-site classroom setting, they will be held using distance learning solutions recommended by the University of Warsaw.

Knowledge - the graduate knows and understands:
- the complex structure of language as a system (K2_W01),
- specialised terminology in linguistics (K2_W03),
- the role of language in communication (K2_W10),
- the relationship of linguistics with other fields of science (K2_W11).
Skills - a graduate can:
- apply the acquired knowledge when preparing and presenting research papers in Spanish (K2_U01, K2_U02);
- search, analyse, evaluate and select information in language Spanish (K2_U04);
- be able to use both spoken and written Spanish at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (K2_U09);
- acquire knowledge of linguistics independently (K2_U11).
Social competence - the graduate is ready to:
- critically evaluate the content received (K2_K01);
- adequately identify and resolve communication problems (K2_K02).

The subject may be subject to the following assessment:
- Continuous assessment (preparation for class, completion of tasks during class),
- homework,
- preparation of presentations,
- preparation of written work,
- written tests.
The subject ends with an examination.
All entries are assessed according to the following percentage scale of correctness:
99% - 100% - 5!
98% - 91% - 5
90% - 86% - 4,5
85% - 76% - 4
75% - 71% - 3,5
70% - 60% - 3
59% - 0 % - 2
The specific requirements and assessment criteria are determined by each course instructor in a specific learning cycle.
Two absences per semester are permitted.
