The course covers key issues related to signed language translation and the functioning of the translation industry. Topics such as types of
specialised translations, specialised terminology and phraseology, issues of translation quality and ethics, and applicable professional standards will be discussed.
The main objective of the course is to develop critical analysis skills for texts translated from Polish Sign Language (PJM) into Polish (A) and from Polish into PJM (B). Students will learn about the basic strategies and theories of translation, which will be used in practice.
The course will also present the main trends in research on translation — both quantitative and qualitative — covering various aspects: the context of signed language translation, its reception, the role of the translator, the translation process itself, and the final product. The analysis of the subject literature aims to develop methodological and tool awareness, enabling students to conduct independent research in the field of translation using appropriate research methods.
The course also takes into account the practical dimension of the signed language translator's profession — important issues related to the provision of translation services are discussed, and participants are given the opportunity to analyse real cases taken from professional practice.
The expected workload includes 60 hours of contact classes (1 ECTS point) and an additional 60 hours of independent study (preparation for classes and exams).
If it is not possible to conduct classes in a classroom setting, classes will be held using remote communication tools, most likely Google Meet and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
The course is conducted within the “Integrated Teaching & Learning Development Programme – ZIP 2.0”, which is co-financed by the European Social Fund – the European Funds for Social Development Programme 2021–2027 (FERS) (contract no.: FERS.01.05-IP.08-0365/23-00).

The course is assessed as follows:
- continuous assessment (preparation for classes, completion of tasks during classes),
- homework,
- preparation of presentations,
- preparation of written assignments and recordings.
The course ends with a pass mark.
All work is assessed according to the following percentage scale of
correctness:
99% – 100% – 5!
98% – 91% – 5
90% – 86% – 4.5
85% – 76% – 4
75% – 71% – 3.5
70% – 60% – 3
59% – 0 % – 2
Detailed requirements and assessment criteria are specified by each lecturer in a specific educational cycle.
Students are allowed a maximum of two absences per semester.
Unexcused absences exceeding this limit will result in the inability to pass the course and receive a positive grade. In exceptional cases, students
may be permitted to make up missed classes through additional work assigned by the course instructor.
