Prerequisites (description)

Introduction to simultaneous interpreting This course covers the following elements: 1. Introduction to interpreting modes and the characteristics of interpreting; 2. Introduction to methods, strategies and techniques of simultaneous interpreting from language B to language A (Polish); 3. Introduction to working in the booth: working with the microphone, interpreter desk, using „mute/cough”; switching from interpreter passive to active mode and vice versa; 4. Developing interpreting skills by means of interpreting gradually more difficult texts; 5. Developing skills such as attentional switching bilingual activation, ear-voice span management and anticipation; developing the interpreter’s working memory; 6. Enhancing the techniques of interpreting narrative and argumentative, circa 10-minute-long texts; 7. Enhancing the quality of interpreting based on the following criteria: accuracy, fluency, target text logic and correctness; 8. Ethics in interpreting.

Learning outcomes

The student:

KNOWLEDGE

4. can intrepret, in the simultaneous mode, narrative and argumentative texts related to current news, circa 10 minute-long, moderately advances in terms of vocabulary and phraseology

ATTITUDE
1. knows professional conduct and standards, i.e. how to behave in the booth and work in teams
2. knows the quality assessment criteria: accuracy – clarity - completeness - fluency
3. understands and observes the basic rules of preparing for an assignment and self-enhancement

Assessment criteria

- regular attendance, 80% of all classes as a minimum
- active participation in classes
