Simultaneous interpretation and translation (B language) - French - level 1 3200-M1-3TSYBF1
Student’s time investment:
30 class hours;
15 hrs preparation;
5 hrs final assignment or test preparation.
In sum: 50 hrs, corresponding to 2 ECTS.
The aim of the course is to enhance the basic simultaneous interpreting skills acquired during the first semester. Irrespective of developing the skills of paraphrasing, rendering sense and logic, interpreting facts (including numbers and proper names), constructing logical target texts and speaking fluently, the students learn to render the style and intentions of the source text speaker, maintain accurate register, as well as interpret details of specialised texts and manage articulation and the microphone. Students also develop mnemonics while working in the booth. At the same time, the teacher provides for practical information about the interpreting profession and cooperation with othe rinterpreters. In the course of the semeter, the students polish their interpreting skills, working with various texts of diferent topics, styles and registers. At the same time, they enhance their general knowledge and language skills, both in their foreign and native lanuguage.

KNOWLEDGE
The graduate knows:
− types and forms of simultaneous interpreting and its development trends (S2_W01, K_W02, K_W03, K_W05, K_W11)
− the tools, basic strategies and techniques of simultaneous interpreting, as well as the rules of cooperation in the booth and working with a microphone (S2_W02, K_W01, K_W02, K_W03, K_W10)
SKILLS
The graduate is able to:
− use the technique of divided attention (S2_ K_U01, K_U03, K_U05)
− maintain optimal décalage (S2_ K_U01, K_U03, K_U05)
− use the anticipation strategy (S2_ K_U01, K_U03, K_U05)
− simultaneously interpret from French into Polish (language A) and from Polish (language A) into French a narrative and argumentative text on current events, 10 minutes long, with a medium level of lexical and phraseological difficulty. (S2 _K_U03, K_U04, K_U07, K_U08, K_U09, K_U10, K_U11, K_U13)
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
The graduate is prepared:
− to uphold the ethos of the translation profession and to observe and develop the principles of professional ethics for interpreters (S2_KO8, K_K04, K_K05)
− to critically evaluate original texts/oral statements and their translations. (S2_KO1, K_K01, K_K05, K_K06)
− recognise the importance of knowledge, including translation knowledge, in solving translation problems. (S2_KO2, K_K01, K_K02, K_K05)
