Simultaneous interpretation and translation (B language) - French - level 1 3200-M1-3TSYBF1

Student’s time investment:
30 class hours;
15 hrs preparation;
5 hrs final assignment or test preparation.
In sum: 50 hrs, corresponding to 2 ECTS.

The aim of the course is to enhance the basic simultaneous interpreting skills acquired during the first semester. Irrespective of developing the skills of paraphrasing, rendering sense and logic, interpreting facts (including numbers and proper names), constructing logical target texts and speaking fluently, the students learn to render the style and intentions of the source text speaker, maintain accurate register, as well as interpret details of specialised texts and manage articulation and the microphone. Students also develop mnemonics while working in the booth. At the same time, the teacher provides for practical information about the interpreting profession and cooperation with othe rinterpreters. In the course of the semeter, the students polish their interpreting skills, working with various texts of diferent topics, styles and registers. At the same time, they enhance their general knowledge and language skills, both in their foreign and native lanuguage.

Prerequisites (description)

This course covers the following elements: 1. Developing correct articulation: voice and microphone management, including breathing and setting correct microphone position; 2. Developing the skills of fast recognition and the rendering of stylistic details (neologisms, phraseology, etc.); 3. Developing general knowledge; 4. Developing knowledge about Polish, EU and other related countries’ institutions, legal systems, politics, economies and cultures; 5. Developing the ability to render specific details (such as numbers, geographical and historical names, patronymes and toponymes); 6. Conducting practical exercises in simultaneous interpreting; interpreting different source text speakers; 7. Analysing the vocabulary, grammar and phraseology of source texts, leading to enhancing one’s own skills; developing the ability to decipher the sense and context of the source text; 8. Enhancing the ability to interpret based on specialised and more difficult texts, longer than 10 minutes; 9. Developing the ability to work with preparatory material; 10. Working on booth cooperation.

The student:

KNOWLEDGE
1. knows basic skills, strategies and techniques of simultaneous interpreting, including booth cooperation and microphone management

SKILLS
1. is capable of interpreting specialised texts delivered by different speakers
2. can simultaneously interpret texts longer than 10 minutes, advanced in terms of vocabulary, phraseology and structure
3. can apply mnemonics in the booth

ATTITUDE
1. knows professional conduct and standards, i.e. how to behave in the booth and work together with othe rinterpreters
2. knows the quality assessment criteria: accuracy – clarity - completeness - fluency - articulation - style
3. understands and observes the basic rules of preparing for an assignment and self-enhancement
