Simultaneous interpretation and translation (B language) - English level 1 3200-M1-3TSYBA1
Student’s time investment:
30 class hours;
30 hrs preparation + final assignment or test preparation.
In sum: 60 hrs, corresponding to 2 ECTS.
The aim of the course is to introduce students to basic notions related to simultaneous interpreting. The semester starts with students learning about the basic characteristics of simultaneous interpreting and oprocesses occurring during bilingual language control and concurrent listening and speaking. They will learn how to work in booths and use the interpreter desks. Subsequently, students acquire simultaneous interpreting skills first due to simple exercises, and subsequently - by means of simple, short texts (up to 10 minut). Students acquire the skills of paraphrasing, rendering sense and logic, interpreting facts (including numbers and proper names), constructing logical target texts and speaking fluently. At the same time, the teacher provides for practical information about the interpreting profession and professional conduct, as well as basic information about working with clients and other interpreters. In the course of the semeter, the students polish their interpreting skills, at the same time enhancing their general knowledge and language skills, both in their foreign and native lanuguage.

The graduate knows:
− types and forms of simultaneous interpreting and its development trends (S2_W01, K_W02, K_W03, K_W05, K_W11)
− the tools, basic strategies and techniques of simultaneous interpreting, as well as the rules of cooperation in the booth and working with a microphone (S2_W02, K_W01, K_W02, K_W03, K_W10)
SKILLS
The graduate is able to:
− use the technique of divided attention (S2_ K_U01, K_U03, K_U05)
− maintain optimal décalage (S2_ K_U01, K_U03, K_U05)
− use the anticipation strategy (S2_ K_U01, K_U03, K_U05)
− simultaneously interpret from Spanish into Polish (language A) and from Polish (language A) into Spanish a narrative and argumentative text on current events, 10 minutes long, with a medium level of lexical and phraseological difficulty. (S2 _K_U03, K_U04, K_U07, K_U08, K_U09, K_U10, K_U11, K_U13)
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
The graduate is prepared:
− to uphold the ethos of the translation profession and to observe and develop the principles of professional ethics for interpreters (S2_KO8, K_K04, K_K05)
− to critically evaluate original texts/oral statements and their translations. (S2_KO1, K_K01, K_K05, K_K06)
− recognise the importance of knowledge, including translation knowledge, in solving translation problems. (S2_KO2, K_K01, K_K02, K_K05)
