Consecutive interpreting (C language) -Spanish - level 1 3200-M1-3TKOCH1
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basic notions in consecutive interpreting. At the beginning of the course the students learn about the communication model of consecutive intepreting and identify the processes within the model. Subsequently the students begin their practical workshops. Initially they train with short fragments (from 15 to 120 seconds) which they memorise and interpret without any notes. At this stage they learn to memorise the structure and the logic of the text. Moreover, they practise their paraphrasing skills in both A (Polish) and C (Spanish) languages. The following part of the course introduces note-taking in consecutive interpreting, with techniques used to render the structure/logic and the contents of the text. Subsequently the students begin to practise longer texts (from 1 to 4-minutes-long) with note-taking. Throughout the entire course the instructor presents practical information on the profession of the consecutive interpreter and the interpreter’s work ethics as well as the specificity of the profession & the market. The attending students can practise their practical interpreting skills but also expand their general knowledge and the knowledge of their A language (Polish) and C language (Spanish).
Student’s time investment:
60 class hours;
30 hrs preparation;
10 hrs final assignment or test preparation.
In sum: 100 hrs, corresponding to 4 ECTS.
FORMS OF WORK:
If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the University.

After completing the course the student
- knows key concepts related to the theory of consecutive interpreting and its major developmental trends (S2_W01, K_W02, K_W03, K_W05, K_W11)
- knows strategies and techniques used in consecutive interpreting (S2_W02, K_W01, K_W02, K_W03, K_W10)
- understands the fundamental problems of consecutive interpreting as an interlingual and intercultural phenomenon (S2_W04, K_W01, K_W02, K_W10)
SKILLS
The student can:
- apply knowledge of interpreting theory in order to solve complex interpreting problems through appropriate preparation and the selection of interpreting strategies suitable for the context of consecutive interpreting (S2_U01, K_U01, K_U03, K_U05)
- perform consecutive interpreting (with note-taking) of general-interest texts (approx. 4 minutes) and specialised texts (approx. 3 minutes) from Spanish into Polish and from Polish into Spanish; identify the type of the source text and render it into the target language by selecting equivalents appropriate to the given social context (S2_U04, K_U03, K_U04, K_U07, K_U08, K_U09, K_U10, K_U11, K_U13)

The student is ready to:
- take an active part in the interpreting process at all its stages (S2_U09, K_K02, K_K04, K_K06)
- uphold the ethos of the interpreting profession as well as comply with and further develop the principles of professional ethics in interpreting (S2_K08, K_K04, K_K05)
Assessment criteria
Credit based on:
- regular attendance; two (2) absences per semester are permitted
- active participation in classes
- successful delivery of final exercise/s, assessment criteria:
content: 60%
language: 20%
delivery: 20%
The same criteria apply to retake examinations.
The allowed number of absences is 2 per 30 contact hours. When the number of allowed absences is exceeded, the student will be given extra-tasks aimed at making up the missing material from the classes. In case the number of absences exceeds 50% results in a negative grade at the end of the semester.
