Student’s time investment:
2x 30=60 class hours;
2x 15=30 hrs preparation;
2x 5=10 hrs final assignment or test preparation.
In sum: 2x 50=100 hrs, corresponding to 4 ECTS.
This course is aimed at developing students’ knowledge and skills necessary for successful consecutive interpretation. The core of the course is the practical component: exercises with texts of different lengths, initially about 2 - 4 minutes, going up to 5-6 towards the end of the semester. Throughout the course the students develop their note-taking techniques and learn to spot issues in their notes. Furthermore, throughout the entire course the instructor presents practical information on the profession of the consecutive interpreter and the interpreter’s work ethics. Apart from practising consec in the “conventional” mode, the students also learn about and practise liaison/ad hoc interpreting. The attending students can practise their practical interpreting skills but also expand their general knowledge and the knowledge of their A and B languages. At this stage, more specialist texts are introduced which are more challenging for the students and require more extensive lexical preparation.

KNOWLEDGE
The student:
a) knows key concepts related to the theory of consecutive interpreting and its major developmental trends (S2_W01, K_W02, K_W03,
K_W05, K_W11)
b) knows strategies and techniques used in consecutive interpreting (S2_W02, K_W01, K_W02, K_W03, K_W10)
c) understands the fundamental problems of consecutive interpreting as an interlingual and intercultural phenomenon (S2_W04, K_W01, K_W02, K_W10)
d) understands the economic, legal and ethical conditions of professional practice in interpreting (S2_W06, K_W09, K_W13)
SKILLS
The student can:
a) apply knowledge of interpreting theory in order to solve complex interpreting problems through appropriate preparation, adequate assessment of the function of the interpreting task, and the selection of interpreting strategies suited to the context of consecutive interpreting (S2_U01, K_U01, K_U03, K_U05)
b) perform consecutive interpreting (with note-taking) of both general and specialised texts from French into Polish (A language) and from Polish (A language) into French, with a duration of 4 – 6 minutes;
identify the type of the source text and render it into the target language by selecting equivalents appropriate to the given social context (S2_U04, K_U03, K_U04, K_U07, K_U08, K_U09, K_U10, K_U11, K_U13)
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
The student is ready to:
a) critically evaluate public spoken statements and their interpretations
and describe any errors (S2_K01, K_K01, K_K05, K_K06)
b) perform the professional role of an interpreter responsibly, taking into account changing market needs, in particular social needs (S2_K07, K_K02, K_K03, K_K04)
c) uphold the ethos of the interpreting profession as well as comply with and further develop the principles of professional ethics in interpreting (S2_K08, K_K04, K_K05)
Assessment criteria
Credit based on:
- Attendance at classes (a maximum of 2 absences is allowed per each 30 contact hours).
In the case of more than two unexcused absences, the student must submit a medical certificate to the teacher (within the deadline agreed with the group during the first class) and request that the teacher determine the form of assessment for the material covered in the classes missed.
An unexcused absence from 50% (or more) of the classes results in a failing grade at the end of the semester and the obligation to repeat the semester for this course.
