Terminology A and B - German language, level 1 3200-M1-2TAB1N
The course is designed to prepare students for translating specialised texts in the aforementioned fields of knowledge, as well as for undertaking future work as terminologists. The process of familiarising students with specialist terminology is carried out in several stages:
– a theoretical introduction to specialist terminology in a given field, delivered through lectures and exercises;
– a presentation of the standards governing terminologists’ work, delivered in lecture format;
– a presentation of methods for identifying terms in specialised texts, delivered through lectures and practical exercises;
– a presentation of methods for compiling terminology cards, delivered through lectures and practical exercises;
– a presentation of methods for creating terminology databases, delivered through lectures and practical exercises;
– a range of lexical exercises dedicated to mastering the terminology of the given field.
The course enables students to acquire the knowledge necessary to create terms and terminology databases independently, to produce specialised translations, and to resolve translation and terminological problems. The skills gained will allow future practitioners of translation and terminology to prepare for effective collaboration with experts in the relevant field.
The course carries 2 ECTS credits, which corresponds to:
30 hours of class attendance and in-class work (1 ECTS), and
15 hours of preparation for classes plus 15 hours of preparation for the written end-of-semester test.

Term 2024L:
The course is aimed at deepening the knowledge of the terminology of languages A and B on the example of two selected modules from among those proposed in a given cycle of education in the field of legal, economic, technical, medical, political terminology, in the field of culture and art. The range of topics is tailored to the module. As in the description of "Information about the group". The subject is assigned 2 ECTS points, which means: 30 hours - attendance and work during the course (1 ECTS) and 30 hours - preparation for the course and tests. TOTAL: 60 HOURS = 2 ECTS |

Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student demonstrates the following skills:
(KNOWLEDGE) - the graduate knows and understands:
- the complex structure of the language as a system and its historical variability (K2_W01)
- linguistics terminology, in particular terminology (K2_W02)
- main development directions and the most important scientific achievements in the field of linguistics (K2_W06)
- interrelationships of applied linguistics (in particular terminology) with other fields of science (K2_W09)
- major research centers in the field of terminology (K2_W10)
- in the extended scope the role of language in communication between people and cultures, as well as cultural differences being an important factor in shaping relationships in the modern world (K2_W11)
- in-depth socio-economic and legal realities in the areas related to the languages studied (K2_W12)
- key concepts used in the fields of knowledge that are the subject of study (terminology), i.e. the concept of text, specialist text, terminology base, terminology dictionary, as well as the structure of languages A and B; (S2.3_W01)
- main development trends in terminology (from traditional dictionaries to multilingual specialized terminology databases) (S2.3_W02)
- fundamental dilemmas of modern translation studies related to acting at the interface: a) different cultures (cultural differences, ethical and religious problems, diplomacy), b) fields of knowledge (specialized translation), c) representatives of various social layers (communication: layman - professional, professional-professional) (S2.3_W04)
- rules for the protection of intellectual property and copyright in relation to terminological activities (S2.3_W07)
- basic principles of the terminologist's activity on the contemporary labor market in Poland and in other countries (development opportunities, expectations of employers, professional organizations) (S2.3_W08)

(SKILLS) - the graduate can:
- to deeply identify characteristic cultural elements and properly interpret socio-historical changes taking place in relation to the realities of the studied language area (K2_U02)
- advanced search, analyze, evaluate and select information in the native language and foreign languages using the latest information and communication technologies (K2_U03)
- independently use advanced research tools in applied linguistics, including appropriately selected methods and tools to solve problems and create in-depth interpretations (K2_U04)
- communicate using different communication channels and techniques with specialists in linguistics and non-specialists in native and foreign language in typical and non-standard professional situations requiring knowledge of techniques, strategies and various communication channels, and is able to counteract conflicts by using language as a communication tool (K2_U05)
- use language B in speech and writing at level C2 of the European System of Description for Language Education (K2_U07)
- cooperate and work in a group, assuming various roles (including the role of a terminologist) (K2_U09)
- lead the group, assuming responsibility for the results of its work (K2_U10)
- independently acquire
Assessment criteria
Final grade assessment consists of the following components:
– continuous assessment during classes: participation and preparation = 20%
– assessment from two mid-semester tests = 30%
– assessment from the end-of-semester examination: 50%.
Each test, including the end-of-semester examination, may be retaken once.
Marking scale:
51%–60% = 3
61%–70% = 3+
71%–80% = 4
81%–90% = 4+
91%–100% = 5
Two unexcused absences per semester are permitted. Exceeding this limit results in the student being barred from the end-of-semester examination and failing the course.
