The program of the course includes the following contents:
1. Word formation as a part of descriptive grammar; place of word formation in the language system; types of word formation (derivation, adaptation, composition).
2. Basic knowledge of word formation; the concept of word and morpheme (lexical, inflectional, word-formation morphemes); division of the word;
2. Types of derivation, types and functions of formants, productivity, meanings and ambiguities of formants.
3. Word formation of different parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, numeral): affixation, compounding, blending.
4. Abbreviations, acronyms and abbreviations.
Course workload:
Classroom activities: 30hrs (1st semester), 30hrs (2nd semester) = 2 ECTS yearly
30hrs =1 ECTS
Self study – 30 hrs (in each semester) = 1 ECTS, including:
- preparation for the classes – 20 hrs;
- preparation for the final exam– 10 hrs.
Total (in each semester): 30 hrs+30 hrs = 60 hrs = 2 ECTS

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student:
Knowledge:
- has a structured and detailed knowledge of the grammatical system of the Italian language and can use it in the glottodidactic process (K2_W01);
- knows terminology in the field of general linguistics, in particular related to morphology (K2_W02);
- knows and understands, to a greater extent, the processes of creating vocabulary in Italian and contemporary word-formation tendencies (K2_W03);
- knows and understands pragmatic aspects of morphology, e.g. in the process of creating specialized terminology (K2_W04);
- knows in a deepened degree the mechanisms of creating words in Italian and basic methods of analyzing vocabulary in terms of its structure (K2_W07);
- knows and understands the interrelations of morphology with other branches of linguistics and specialist languages (K2_W09).
Skills:
- can use the acquired knowledge to conduct research in the field of lexicology (K2_U01);
- is able to analyze the structure of vocabulary in Italian in an advanced degree (K2_U03);
- can independently classify the vocabulary due to the morphological process that led to its formation and select research methods to interpret the language material (K2_U04);
- can independently formulate conclusions using arguments based on the views of other authors (K2_U06);
- can independently acquire knowledge in the field of linguistics (morphology) and observe contemporary trends in the creation of new words in Italian (K2_U011).
Assessment criteria
Methods of assessment of students' work:
• continuous assessment - ongoing preparation for classes - reading the assigned texts, an active participation in the classes);
• final written exam on the material realized during the classes.
The progress assessment and the final exam grade are established in accordance with the following scale:
• more than 90% – 5
• 85%-89% – 4+
• 80%-84% – 4
• 70%-79% – 3+
• 60%-69% – 3
Rules of cooperation of teachers and students:
For every 30hrs of each course component:
- two unjustified absences are allowed. If students are absent more than twice during a semester (including the fact of being absent for justified reasons), they are obliged to notify this fact to the lecturer who will inform them on other form of making up the classes. More than 50% absences may result in not receiving a failing grade;
- students are allowed to notify the fact of not being prepared for the classes (e.g. not having read texts, not having materials etc.) three times in each semester.
