The Sicily Between Myth and Reality - History, Literature, Art 3200-M1-2PFW1
An overview of the history and culture of Sicily, roughly from the Middle Ages to the present day. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the history, culture, art and economy of historical and contemporary Sicily. Students will learn basic information about the geography, history, literature and culture of Sicily.
The course curriculum includes the following content:
Sicily during the period of Arab and Norman domination. Cultural and economic development. Artistic and architectural legacy.
Hohenstaufen domination in Sicily. Sicilian school.
Sicily under the Angevins and Aragonese. Culture and art
Renaissance in Sicily. Spanish domination. Economy, literature, art.
Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Sicilian Baroque.
Unification of Italy. Sicily in the years 1860-1922.
Verga and Pirandello's Sicily. Analysis of selected fragments of literary works.
Fascism and the Second World War.
Post-war period.
Sicilian mafia.
Leonardo Sciascia.
The phenomenon of Commissioner Montalbano.
Sicilian folklore.
Sicilian cuisine.
Current political and economic situation.

Knowledge:
- the student has a structured, in-depth general knowledge, including terminology, theories and methodology in the field of literary and cultural studies (K_W03)
- has structured, in-depth, leading to specialization, detailed knowledge in the field of literary and cultural studies (K_W04)
- knows and understands advanced methods of analysis, interpretation, evaluation and problematization of various cultural products appropriate for selected traditions, theories or research schools, in the field of literary and cultural studies ( K_W07)
Skills:
- can search, analyze, evaluate, select and integrate information from various sources and formulate critical judgments in the field of literary and cultural studies on this basis (K_U01)
- is able to carry out a critical analysis and interpretation of various types of cultural products using original approaches, taking into account the new achievements of literary and cultural studies, in order to determine their meanings, social impact, and place in the historical and cultural process (K_U05)
- has the ability to formulate critical opinions about cultural products on the basis of linguistic knowledge and experience, and the ability to present critical studies in various forms and in various media (K_U07)
Social competence:
- adequately identifies and resolves dilemmas of interlingual communication caused by the asymmetry of language systems and cultural differences within literary and cultural studies as well as disciplines dealing with the cultural realities of countries in the areas of given languages (K_K04)
Assessment criteria
Assessment based on attendance (60% required) and the result of the final test (passes 60% of correct answers)

over 90% - 5
85%-89% - 4+
80%-84% - 4
70%-79% - 3+
60%-69% - 3
