Specialised Translation 3200-M1-0PS
The course overviews key concepts and issues related to specialised translation and the translation industry, such as types of specialised translation, features of specialised languages, specialised terminology and phraseology, translation quality, industry standards and translation technologies. The objective of the course is to foster students’ ability to critically analyse selected types of specialised texts translated into Polish (A) and from Polish into language B by familiarising students with main techniques and theories of specialised translation. The course will introduce major research methodologies, both qualitative and quantitative approaches, on specialised translation in relation to the context of translation and its reception, translators, the translation process and the product (translation). A thorough review and analysis of academic literature is intended to raise methodological awareness and professional skills in order to prepare students to independently and confidently carry out research on various types of specialised translation with qualitative and quantitative methods and to guide students through solving translation problems. Additionally, the course introduces students into the profession of translator and related professions by discussing practical aspects of the provision of translation services and by inviting guest speakers from the translation industry.

If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the University.
The student’s workload is 30 contact hours (1 ECTS) plus 30 hours of self-study (preparation for classes and a test/project).

K2_W02 The student knows and understands the terminology of Translation Studies, in particular that related to specialised translation and terminology.
K2_W06 The student knows and understands main research trends and achievements in the area of Translation Studies with reference to specialised translation.
K2_W07 The student has an in-depth knowledge and understanding of research methods used in Translation Studies and basic methods of analysis and interpretation of specialised texts in line with selected traditions, theories or research schools in the field of Translation Studies and Terminology.
K2_W09 The student knows and understands mutual links between Translation Studies/Terminology and other academic fields.

Assessment criteria
1) Attendance and active participation in the class. Permissible number of absences: 2; in the case of a larger number of absences, the lecturer determines how the course content is to be tested (a written or oral test).
2) In order to pass the course, the student is required to obtain a passing mark on each graded component.
A form of assessment to be determined by the lecturer: a test, a project (see detailed information)
Assessment criteria: 100-90% - very good, 89-80% good plus, 79-70% good, 69-60% sufficient plus, 59-51% sufficient, 50-0% fail
