Research methodologies in translation studies 3200-M1-0MBP
The aim of the lecture is to broaden the knowledge of students on the methods and reasearch tools in contemporary translation studies, with particular emphasis on the relations between translation studies and other disciplines, such as sociology, history, cognitive science, literature studies, computer science, pedagogy, psychology and others.
The course covers the following groups of topics:
1. principles and ethics in translation research; collaborative and non-professional translation: the profession, identity and status of the translator; the role of the translator; literary and film representations of the translator;
2. history of research in translation studies;
3. process-oriented research in translation studies (using methods such as eye tracking, keystroke logging, mixed methods); cognitive processes in translation; new technologies in translation and interpretation; machine translation and post-editing;
4. product-oriented research in translation studies (including the role and use of discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, corpus research and translation quality research);
5. recipient-oriented research in translation studies (by means of questionnaires, interviews, focus group research, observations; qualitative and quantitative research);
Among the research methods, the following approaches and tools will be discussed: action research, bibliometric research, corpus research, communication ethnography, histoire croisée, experimental research, case studies.

Upon completion of the course, the student:

- knows and understands the main directions of development and the most important scientific achievements in the field of translation studies K2_W06,
- knows and understands in depth the research methods used in translation studies and the basic methods of analysis and interpretation of various cultural products, theories or research schools in the field of translation studies K2_W07,
- knows and understands the terms and principles of intellectual property and copyright protection in a professional level K2_W08,
- knows and understands the interdependencies between translation studies and other academic fields K2_W09,
- knows and understands the main research centres in the field of translation studies K2_W10,

- is able to use the acquired knowledge to carry out research in the field of translation studies using the appropriate methodology K2_U01,
- is able to search, analyse, evaluate and select information in his/her mother tongue and foreign languages at an advanced level, using the latest information and communication technologies K2_U03,
- can independently use advanced research tools, including methods and tools to solve problems and create in-depth interpretations of K2_U04,
- is able to formulate and express his/her own views and ideas using arguments based on the views of other authors and to formulate oral and written conclusions on his/her own in foreign languages and the native language K2_U06,
- can independently acquire knowledge of translation studies and assess the usefulness of methods, practices and procedures in his/her own professional activity K2_U11,

- is ready to recognise the importance of the latest knowledge in the field and to critically evaluate the content received, in particular research and publications in the field of translation studies K2_K01,
- is ready to recognise the importance of knowledge in solving cognitive and practical problems and to consult experts in the event of difficulties in resolving problem on its own K2_K06
Assessment criteria
Methods of evaluation:
- Continuous assessment ( preparation for classes and performance of tasks during classes, possibility of additional tasks such as a presentation or a project)
- oral exam.
Evaluation criteria for the exam
- the degree of mastering of the discussed issues and the indicated literature
- ability to process and communicate the knowledge he/she has learned in his/her own statements
