Methodology of literary studies 3200-M1-0MBL
During this course students will learn not only about the importance of methodology for scientific literary research, but also about the most important methodological trends, which arose in 19th, 20th and the 21th century (cf. list of topics) and had the greatest significance for the development of literary studies and/or comparative literature in this time. The course will also include related disciplines, e. g. translation studies (literary translation), book science and textual scholarship or history of institutions important for literary life.
Based on selected theoretical texts (availably for students at the beginning of the term), which had fundamental significance for a certain methodological direction, we will discuss the basic assumptions, historical and cultural conditions as well as the aims of a particular methodological direction. This will help students to learn about the methods, which will be helpful for them realizing their research projects and writing their master’s thesis. It is important to understand how and to what extent the discussed issues can be used in the preparation of the theoretical part of the Master's thesis on the literature in a particular language or literary translation. In addition, students should broaden their knowledge of polish and foreign terminology of the theory of literature and learn how to use it. Therefore a very important element of this course is the question how to apply the particular methodological directions to specific topics, which students have chosen for their own research, in practice. Furthermore this course supports properly readings skills of theoretical and scientific texts, the students are encouraged to formulate assessments about the discussed texts.
Classes may have the form of a seminar. Therefore, students are encouraged to actively participate in discussions, search for materials dealing with issues of their own interests and prepare papers or presentations.

In this eventuality final grade is an arithmetic mean from the results of the test and the final exam.

60-67% = satisfactory (3.0)
68-75% = satisfactory plus (3.5)
76-83% = good (4.0)
84-91% = good plus (4.5)
92-98% = very good (5.0)
99-100% = very good! (5.0!)
Students are required to attend all the classes, the allowed number of absences is 2 per 30 contact hours. When the number of allowed absences is exceeded, the student will be given additional tasks aimed at making up for the material missed from the classes by that student. If the number of absences exceeds 50% of contact hours, it will result in a negative grade from the entire course.
Credit and written exam during the retake exam session will be held due to the same conditions as in the main session.
