BA Proseminar - French 3200-L3-PSLF
The aim of the proseminar is to show students the possible thematic scopes of their BA thesis by introducing them to research methods commonly used in the field of applied linguistics, discussing specific issues of linguistics or literary studies, and the methodological foundations of scientific research conducted within these disciplines.
The classes also educate the skills of independent reading and analysis of a scientific text in a foreign language. The course also covers the features of the academic language and the formal register.
Classes are conducted in a foreign language, each participant is obliged to actively participate in the classes.
To obtain a credit, the student should present the outline of the BA thesis or its first chapter (to the decision of the teacher).
Contact hours (classes): 30 hours
Student's own work: 120 hours
Total: 150 hours
If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be held using distance communication tools (Google Meet and others recommended by the University of Warsaw)

After completing the course, the student:

The student knows and understands
• the specificity of contemporary linguistics paradigms (general and applied), has ordered general knowledge in the field of theory and methodology in the field of linguistics and literary studies [K1_W05]
• connections of applied linguistics and literary studies with other fields of science and scientific disciplines [K1_W06]
• has knowledge of designing the path of own development and professional promotion [K1_W14]
Skills
Student
• has elementary research skills, is able to formulate research problems and is able to use the research tools of applied linguistics (within the sub-fields of linguistics according to the selected module) and literary studies; is able to properly select methods that allow to solve problems within a given field [K1_U02]
• has the ability to argue using the views of other authors and independently formulate conclusions in the oral and written form in Polish and in two studied foreign languages [K1_U04]
• can communicate in two studied foreign languages in typical professional situations requiring knowledge of techniques, strategies and various communication channels, and can counteract conflicts using language as a communication tool [K1_U05]
• can properly apply theoretical knowledge in the field of studied fields (applied linguistics and literary studies) in typical professional situations, including team projects, also in interdisciplinary projects [K1_U10]
• can independently acquire knowledge in the field of applied linguistics and literary studies, following the guidance of a research tutor; can assess the usefulness of the known methods, practices and procedures for their own professional activity [K1_U11]
• can define priorities and plan activities aimed at their implementation, understanding the need for self-education and continuous improvement of qualifications, including practical language competences [K1_U12]
Social competence
The student is ready to
• critical assessment of their own knowledge in the field of applied linguistics and literary studies, appreciates the importance of substantive argumentation in solving research and practical problems (in professional situations) [K1_K02]
Assessment criteria
Detailed requirements and assessment criteria are specified by each person conducting the pro-seminar in a specific education cycle.
Acceptable number of absences: 2 absences per semester.
Bibliography
Literature is defined by each teacher in a specific cycle of education.
