Specialised Translations (B/A) - Italian/ Polish -level 1 3200-L3-2TSPBW1
The main goal of the course is to transfer the meaning expressed in the original language to the target language so that the text is created in accordance with the rules of the target language system.
As part of the classes, students are acquainted with selected basic professional terminology and with various types of specialist texts. Students are presented with translation strategies that would enable them to effectively translate specialist texts.
During the classes, students perform varied tasks and translation exercises that show them the specificity of the Italian LSPs, for example: they complement the missing elements in the text, analyze typical language structures and collocations, contrastively analyze texts in Polish and Italian, and translate texts fragments.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student:
KNOWLEDGE
- knows morphological and syntactic structures, understands oral statements and correctly interprets written texts at B2 + level; knows the definitions of words, their synonyms and Italian idioms (K_W01);
- has established lexical and grammatical knowledge of the topics indicated in the description of the subject (K_W02);
- knows and understands the elements of Italian language culture, understands the role of language in interpersonal and cultural communication, understands cultural differences between Poland and Italy, knows well the reality of Italy, their socio-economic determinants (K_W10).
SKILLS
- has language skills at B2 + level according to CEFR, also in typical professional situations requiring knowledge of techniques, strategies and various communication channels (K_U07, K_U10);
- can critically analyze texts as products of culture, can search, analyze, evaluate and select authentic texts in Italian and develop professional skills in this language (K_U01);
- can independently acquire knowledge in the Italian language, guided by the lecturer's instructions, can assess the usefulness of specific sources of information, e.g. dictionaries (online), corpora, articles, etc. (K_U03);
- can translate from Italian to Polish and vice versa different types of written and oral statements (K_U04);
- has acquired theoretical knowledge about the translation process, including specialist translation, its types and specificity, knows the basic translation techniques (K_W04);
- can recognize the characteristic cultural elements and properly interpret phenomena concerning the Italian language, can adequately react in every communication situation according to the cultural context, using usual phrases (K_U05), (K_U08).
SOCIAL COMPETENCE
- is willing to cooperate and work in a group, taking various roles in it and caring for compliance with the rules of communication in Italian (including the role of translator), understands the need to improve the translator's workshop throughout life (K_K01);
- is ready to define priorities and plan actions to implement specific language, communication and professional tasks, understands the need for self-education and the need to continually improve qualifications (K_K03);
- is ready to adequately identify and resolve dilemmas of communication in Italian and Polish, caused by the asymmetry of language systems and cultural differences (K_K04);
- is ready to participate in the cultural life of Poland and Italy in favor of promoting both cultures, using both traditional and modern forms and media (K_K06).
Assessment criteria
Methods of assessment of students’ work:
- assessment of the active participation in the classes (doing tasks in the classroom, preparation for the classes, translation of the given texts);
- mid-term tests (exercises on vocabulary and translation);
- written final exercise (translation PL > IT/ IT > PL).
The final mark consists of the following components:
- 50% is the mark for the participation in the classes (an active participation in the classes, homework, knowledge of vocabulary);
- 50% mid-term tests and written final exercise (translation PL > IT/ IT > PL).
The progress assessment and the final grade are established in accordance with the following scale:
96%-100% – 5!
90%-95% – 5
85%-89% – 4+
80%-84% – 4
70%-79% – 3+
60%-69% – 3
Translation tasks of students are assessed on the basis of:
- the knowledge of lexical / grammatical material,
- the ability to create written statements.
Rules of cooperation of teachers and students:
- 3 unjustified absences are allowed;
- students are allowed to notify the fact of not being prepared for the classes (e.g. not having done homework, not having materials etc.) three times in each semester.
