Specialised Translations (B/A) - German/ Polish 3200-L3-2TSPBN
The primary goal of the course is to convey the meaning expressed in the source language to the target language, so that the text is made in accordance with the principles of the target language system.
As part of the course, students are acquainted to selected basic professional terminology and various types of specialist texts. Students are presented with translation strategies that would enable them to translate specialized texts.
Student workload:
Total ECTS credits = 4
Contact hours (classroom) = 1st semester = 30h and 2nd semester = 30h = 2 ECTS
(25-30h = 1 ECTS!)
Independent student work outside the classroom:
Ongoing preparation for classes - 40h = I and II semesters 20h each
Preparation for the semester credit - 20h = I and II semester 10h each
40h + 20h = 60h = 2 ECTS
If classroom learning is impossible, the classes will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and other tools recommended by the University.

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE:
The student
- knows morphological and syntactic structures, understands oral statements and correctly interprets written texts at B2 + level; knows the definitions of words, their synonyms and German idioms (K_W01);
- has established lexical and grammatical knowledge of the topics indicated in the description of the subject (K_W02);
- knows and understands elements of German language culture, understands the role of language in interpersonal and cultural communication, understands cultural differences between Poland and Germany, knows well the reality of German-speaking countries, their socio-economic determinants (K_W10).
SKILLS
- has language skills at B2 + level according to CEFR, also in typical professional situations requiring knowledge of techniques, strategies and various communication channels (K_U07, K_U10);
- can critically analyze texts as products of culture, can search, analyze, evaluate and select authentic German texts and develop professional skills in this language (K_U01);
- can independently acquire knowledge in the German language, guided by the lecturer's instructions, can assess the usefulness of specific sources of information, e.g. dictionaries (online), corpora, articles, etc. (K_U03);
- can translate from German to Polish and vice versa various types of written and oral statements (K_U04);
- has ordered theoretical knowledge about the translation process, including specialist translation, its types and specificity, knows the basic translation techniques (K_W04);
- can recognize characteristic cultural elements and properly interpret phenomena concerning German language, can adequately react in every communication situation according to cultural context, using usual phrases (K_U05);
- has the ability to prepare written papers in German on the issues introduced (K_U08);
- has the ability to prepare oral presentations in German based on appropriately selected source materials (K_U09).
SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPETENCE
- is ready to cooperate and work in a group, taking various roles in it and caring for compliance with the rules of communication in German (including the role of translator), understands the need to improve the translator's workshop throughout life (K_K01);
- is ready to define priorities and plan actions to implement specific language, communication and professional tasks, understands the need for self-education and the need to improve qualifications (K_K03);
- is ready to identify and resolve dilemmas of communication in German and Polish, caused by the asymmetry of language systems and cultural differences (K_K04);
- is ready to participate in the cultural life of Poland and Germany to promote both cultures, using both traditional and modern forms and media (K_K06)
- is able to professionally interact and work in a professional group; demonstrates ingenuity, activity and regularity in the implementation of own and team projects (S_K02)
Assessment criteria
Methods of evaluating the work of students:
- steady evaluation (activity), preparation for the lessons, homeworks
- mid-semester exam and final written exam.

The final grade comprises:
- steady evaluation (activity) – 50%
- written exam – 50%.
The overall result is established in accordance with the following scale:
• over 90% - 5
• 85% -89% - 4+
• 80% -84% - 4
• 70% -79% - 3+
• 60% -69% - 3
The conditions of a positive mark is regular taking part in the classes and written translation of texts done in the classes. (three unauthorized absences allowed in the semester)
