Introduction to audiovisual translation - language B: Spanish 3200-L3-1WPABH
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with issues related to audiovisual translation (subtitles, voice-over, dubbing) and media accessibility (subtitles for the deaf and audio description). During the course, students will learn about the theoretical and practical issues related to translating foreign-language films into Polish.

Class topics:
Audiovisual translation:
- characteristics of translation in the form of subtitles, dubbing and voice-over,
- audiovisual translator's workshop (including time and space constraints related to synchronisation, rules for placing subtitles, text segmentation in subtitles, rules for developing dialogues and voice-over versions, the specifics of a dialogue writer's work, technical preparation of a dialogue list).
- linguistic correctness of the target text,
- text synthesis,
- translation of elements of different registers and varieties of language,
- translation of humour.
Media accessibility: (subtitles for the deaf, translation into Polish Sign Language (PJM), audio description, respeaking).
Methods and forms of work:
Home reading, discussion, presentations, analysis of audiovisual material, simple translation exercises.

KNOWLEDGE: the graduate knows and understands
- knows the basic terminology of linguistics (general and applied) and literary studies (K1_W02),
- has an overview of the main directions of development and the most important new scientific achievements in the field of linguistics (general and applied) and literary studies (K1_W04),
- knows and understands the specifics of contemporary paradigms of linguistics (general and applied), has structured general knowledge of the theory and methodology of linguistics and literary studies (K1_W05)
- knows and understands the links between applied linguistics and literary studies with other fields of science and scientific disciplines (K1_W06),
- has basic knowledge of the principles of creating and developing various forms of entrepreneurship in the translation market (K1_W16).
SKILLS: graduates are able to:
- critically analyse texts as cultural products, search for, analyse, evaluate and select authentic texts in the two foreign languages studied, and develop professional skills in applied linguistics and literary studies (K1_U01),
- possess basic research skills, formulate research problems and use research tools of applied linguistics (in the subfields of linguistics corresponding to the selected module) and literary studies; select appropriate methods for solving problems within the selected field (K1_U02)
- is able to recognise characteristic cultural elements and correctly interpret socio-historical changes in relation to the realities of a given language area (two foreign languages studied) (K1_U03),
- has the ability to argue using the views of other authors and to formulate conclusions independently, both orally and in writing, in Polish and in the two foreign languages studied (K1_U04),
- is able to communicate in the two foreign languages studied in typical professional situations requiring knowledge of techniques, strategies and various communication channels, and is able to prevent conflicts by using language as a communication tool (K1_U05),
- has an advanced knowledge of the rules of correct Polish and applies them in practice (K1_U08),
- has language skills in two foreign languages studied in accordance with the requirements specified for level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (K1_U09),
- is able to apply theoretical knowledge in the fields of study (applied linguistics and literary studies) in typical professional situations, including team projects, as well as interdisciplinary projects (K1_U10),
- is able to independently acquire knowledge in the field of applied linguistics and literary studies, following the guidance of a supervisor; is able to assess the usefulness of the methods, practices and procedures learned for their own professional activity (K1_U11),
- is able to set priorities and plan actions to achieve them, understanding the need for self-education and continuous improvement of qualifications, including practical language skills (K1_U12),
- is able to solve problems and perform tasks in conditions that are not fully predictable by assessing and analysing the situation and selecting the appropriate methods and tools (K1_U13).
SOCIAL COMPETENCES: graduates are prepared to:
- adequately identify and resolve interlingual communication dilemmas caused by asymmetries in language systems and cultural differences, adhering to ethical standards of behaviour and consulting experts (K1_K01),
- cooperate and work in a group, taking on various roles (including that of a linguistic and cultural mediator) and ensuring compliance with professional ethics (depending on the selected module - professional ethics of a translator or teacher) (K1_K06),
- is ready to take on professional activities and challenges in a social environment, demonstrating the characteristics of a reflective practitioner (K1_K07)
- is ready to think and act in an entrepreneurial manner within the framework of translation, terminology or foreign language teaching projects (K1_K08).

- preparation for classes, participation, partial assignments – continuous assessment,
- two tests (mid-term and final).

60% - 67% 3
68% - 75% 3+
76% - 83% 4
84% - 90% 4+
91% - 97% 5
98-100% 5!
Permissible number of absences: 2. In the event of a higher number of absences, the student should ask the lecturer to determine the form of assessment for the course material. If the number of absences exceeds 50%, this constitutes grounds for failing the course in accordance with the Study Regulations.
