Introduction to audiovisual translation - language B: Spanish 3200-L3-1WPABH
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with issues related to audiovisual translation (subtitles, voice-over, dubbing) and media accessibility (subtitles for the deaf and audio description). During the course, students will learn about the theoretical and practical issues related to translating foreign-language films into Polish.

- independent preparation for classes: 30 hours

Class topics:
Audiovisual translation:
- characteristics of translation in the form of subtitles, dubbing and voice-over,
- audiovisual translator's workshop (including time and space constraints related to synchronisation, rules for placing subtitles, text segmentation in subtitles, rules for developing dialogues and voice-over versions, the specifics of a dialogue writer's work, technical preparation of a dialogue list).
- linguistic correctness of the target text,
- text synthesis,
- translation of elements of different registers and varieties of language,
- translation of humour.
Media accessibility: (subtitles for the deaf, translation into Polish Sign Language (PJM), audio description, respeaking).
Methods and forms of work:
Home reading, discussion, presentations, analysis of audiovisual material, simple translation exercises.

KNOWLEDGE
Student:
- has general knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of various methods of audiovisual translation;
- understands the specifics of individual methods of audiovisual translation, is able to identify differences and similarities between them, and is aware of the importance of technical issues and limitations of each method;
- has basic knowledge of media accessibility in the broad sense;
- knows the principles and good practices of both audiovisual translation and accessibility.
SKILLS:
The student:
- is able to critically evaluate various forms of audiovisual translation and comment on their quality;
- based on their knowledge, is able to consciously determine their further development path related to audiovisual translation;
- is familiar with the available tools for creating subtitles, captions for the deaf, and audio scripts, and is able to preliminarily prepare a text as material for further work in any chosen AVT technique.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
The student:
- is able to identify different target groups using audiovisual translation and adapt methods to their needs and the requirements of the client;
- is sensitive to the needs of people with disabilities and is able to identify which accessibility measures will be most beneficial for different groups of people with disabilities.

- preparation for classes, participation, partial assignments – continuous assessment,
- two tests (mid-term and final).

60% - 67% 3
68% - 75% 3+
76% - 83% 4
84% - 90% 4+
91% - 97% 5
98-100% 5!
Permissible number of absences: 2. In the event of a higher number of absences, the student should ask the lecturer to determine the form of assessment for the course material. If the number of absences exceeds 50%, this constitutes grounds for failing the course in accordance with the Study Regulations.
