Introduction to audiovisual translation - language B: French 3200-L3-1WPABF
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with issues related to audiovisual translation (subtitles, voice-over, dubbing) and media accessibility (subtitles for the deaf and audio description). During the course, students will learn about the theoretical and practical issues related to translating foreign-language films into Polish.

Class topics:
Audiovisual translation:
- characteristics of translation in the form of subtitles, dubbing and voice-over,
- audiovisual translator's workshop (including time and space constraints related to synchronisation, rules for placing subtitles, text segmentation in subtitles, rules for developing dialogues and voice-over versions, the specifics of a dialogue writer's work, technical preparation of a dialogue list).
- linguistic correctness of the target text,
- text synthesis,
- translation of elements of different registers and varieties of language,
- translation of humour.
Media accessibility: (subtitles for the deaf, translation into Polish Sign Language (PJM), audio description, respeaking).
Methods and forms of work:
Home reading, discussion, presentations, analysis of audiovisual material, simple translation exercises.

SKILLS: the graduate
K1_U01 — can analyze texts critically as products of culture, search, analyze, evaluate and select authentic texts in the two studied foreign languages, and develop professional skills in applied language studies and literature studies,
K1_U03 — can recognize distinctive cultural elements and correctly interpret the ongoing socio-historical changes related to the context in a given language area (for the two studied foreign languages),
K1_U04 — can present arguments using the ideas of other authors and autonomously formulate conclusions in speech and in writing in Polish and in the two studied foreign languages,
S1.1_U04 — can conduct a multifaceted analysis of the source text, identifying the most important translation issues,
K1_U05 — is able to communicate in the two studied foreign languages in typical professional situations that require the knowledge of communication techniques, strategies, and channels, and is capable of preventing conflicts using language as a communication tool,
S1.1_U06 — can identify the target audience of a translation and apply translation techniques appropriate to their needs and the client's requirements,
S1.1_U07 — knows and uses contemporary information technologies to the greatest extent possible in research work, translation and text editing,

K1_K01 — is prepared to adequately identify and resolve dilemmas in interlingual communication caused by the asymmetry of language systems and cultural differences, in compliance with the ethical behaviour models and by seeking experts’ opinions,
K1_K06 — is prepared to cooperate and work in a group, assuming various roles (including the role of a language and culture mediator) and complying with the principles for professional ethics (depending on the selected module: translator’s or teacher’s professional ethics),
S1.1_K06 — can act as a mediator in intercultural communication situations, takes cultural differences into account in their work as a translator,
K1_K07 — is prepared to take actions and tackle professional challenges in the social environment, demonstrating the characteristics of a reflective practitioner,
S1.1_K07 — performs his/her duties in accordance with the standards of professional ethics for translators and good professional practice,
K1_K08 — is prepared to think and act in the spirit of entrepreneurship in projects related to translation, terminology, or foreign language teaching,
S1.1_K08 — is prepared to think and act in an entrepreneurial manner in translation projects in which he/she participate as a member or organiser, is able to negotiate with institutions conducting translation activities, and is ready to undertake individual activities on the translation market (domestic and international).

- two tests (mid-term and final).

98-100% 5!
Permissible number of absences: 2. In the event of a higher number of absences, the student should ask the lecturer to determine the form of assessment for the course material. If the number of absences exceeds 50%, this constitutes grounds for failing the course in accordance with the Study Regulations.
