The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the theoretical and practical issues related to audiovisual translation (subtitling, voice-over, and dubbing), as well as with media accessibility (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and audio
description).

- the audiovisual translator’s toolkit
- linguistic correctness
- text condensation
- translation of humor
- translation of vulgar language
Media accessibility:
- characteristics of subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
- fundamentals of audio description
Additional topics:
- respeaking and live subtitling
- translation into Polish Sign Language (PJM)

Knowledge:
S1.1_W12: has knowledge of basic audiovisual translation techniques, understands their specific characteristics, and is aware of national preferences regarding audiovisual translation techniques. (K1_W02, K1_W04, K1_W05)
S1_W02: has in-depth knowledge of translation strategies and techniques used in various types of written and audiovisual texts and in different translation contexts. (K_W01, K_W02, K_W03, K_W10)
S1_W05: has in-depth knowledge of the principles of intellectual property protection and copyright law in the context of written and audiovisual translation. (K_W09)
Skills:
S1.1_U12: has basic knowledge of simple software used for creating subtitles and is able to prepare a voice-over version for audiovisual material. (K1_U08, K1_U09, K1_U12, K1_U13)
Social competencies:
S1.1_K05: recognizes the specific communication needs of persons with disabilities. (K1_K01, K1_K07)
S1_K04: is able to inspire and organize activities aimed at media accessibility for persons with disabilities through the creation and promotion in society of audio description, interlingual subtitles, subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, and translations into sign language. S1_K05: is prepared to join organizations bringing together translators and to undertake activities aimed at promoting the profession of written and audiovisual translator in society. (K_K03, K_K04, K_K05)
S1_K07: is able to perform the professional role of a written and audiovisual translator responsibly, taking into account changing social and market needs. (K_K02, K_K03, K_K04)
Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria:
- preparation for classes (work on assigned texts),
- activity during classes (participation in discussions),
- submission of assessment assignments by the specified deadlines.
Grading scale:
60%–67%: 3
68%–75%: 3+
76%–83%: 4
84%–90%: 4+
91%–97%: 5
98%–100%: 5!
Permissible number of absences: 2. In the case of a higher number of absences, the student should contact the course instructor to request an alternative form of completing the course requirements. If absences exceed 50%, this constitutes grounds for failing the course in accordance with the Study Regulations.
