Introduction to audiovisual translation 3200-L3-1WPA
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the problems of audiovisual translation. During the course, students will learn the history of AVT, as well as issues related to the definition of what audiovisual translation is, its specificity and types. The issues discussed include the characteristics of subtitling (e.g. types of subtitles, including supertitles, subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, danmaku, time and space constraints, guidelines for subtitling, types of subtitling software), principles of voiceover production (including its types and characteristics), dubbing technique (preparation stages, types of synchronisation in dubbing, dubbing in Poland) and media accessibility (audiodescription and respeaking).
Student's workload:
- Scheduled study hours (classes) : 30 hours
- Independent study hours: 20 hours
Total: 50 hours
If it is not possible to conduct classes in a stationary format, classes will be held using distance communication tools recommended by the University of Warsaw.

Knowledge
After completing the course the student:
— knows the different types of audiovisual translation,
— knows the principles of translation in the form of subtitling, voiceover, dubbing, audiodescription and other AVT methods,
— understands the technical issues and constraints involved in producing audiovisual translation.
Cognitive skills
After completing the course the student:
— can distinguish between primary and secondary varieties of audiovisual translation,
— is able to characterise the different types of AVT.
Social skills
After completing the course the student:
— knows the different target groups using different types of AVT,
— understands the needs of diverse audiences in the context of audiovisual translation,
— is aware of the responsibility that the translator takes when creating AVT for different audiences,
— observes the principles of professional ethics.

Pass requirements
Attendance in class. Two absences are allowed, including excused absences. In the case of a larger number of absences, the student should ask the lecturer to determine the form in which the course material is to be passed. If there are more than 50% absences, this constitutes grounds for failing the course under the Academic Regulations.
Assessment criteria
The final pass mark is taken into account. Re-sit conditions — as above.

91% - 97% - 5
98-100% - 5!
