The course is devoted to an in-depth exploration of the creative process in poetry and the complexities of its translation, with a particular focus on contemporary writing and exophonic literature.
Throughout the course, participants will develop their skills in the following areas:
Writing poetry in Spanish:
Students will analyze the styles, forms, and themes of contemporary poetry while being encouraged to experiment with language and to search for their own poetic voice. Particular attention will be given to the experience of writing poetry directly in Spanish and to exploring the linguistic and cultural tools offered by the language.
Fundamentals of poetic translation:
The course will introduce participants to the basic issues involved in translating poetry. Key translation strategies and challenges characteristic of poetic translation will be discussed, including rhythm, metaphor, ambiguity, sound, and cultural references. Students will learn practical methods for working on translations and will develop the ability to analyze different possible translation solutions.
Poetic translation (Spanish–Polish and Polish–Spanish):
Various methods and strategies for translating poetry will be examined, encompassing not only literal meaning but also musicality, rhythm, connotations, and cultural context. Students will engage in practical translation exercises, confronting the challenge of conveying poetic essence between the two languages.
Review and application of selected concepts from literary theory:
As part of the course, participants will revisit the most important concepts and movements in literary theory relevant to the analysis and interpretation of poetry. Special attention will be paid to categories such as the lyrical subject, metaphor, intertextuality, rhythm, poetic form, and the relationship between language and meaning. Theoretical knowledge will be applied in practice through the interpretation and creation of poetic texts, as well as translation work.
Analysis of contemporary poetry:
The course will examine key works by contemporary Spanish-language poets and, where relevant, contemporary Polish authors. These analyses will serve as a source of inspiration and as a foundation for understanding current poetic tendencies.
Exophonic writing:
A significant part of the course will be devoted to the reflection on and practice of literature written in a non-native language. Both the advantages and the challenges of this type of creative work will be discussed, with an emphasis on developing the originality and unique perspective that such an approach can offer.
The aim of the course is to equip students with the critical and creative tools necessary to engage with poetry both as original writing and as translation, while grounding these activities in the context of contemporary poetry and the rich experience of multilingual literary creation.

Assessment criteria
Assessment requirements and grading criteria:
- obtaining a passing grade in the final oral examination (50%)
- completion of homework assignments and in-class exercises (30%)
- attendance, active participation during classes, and regular preparation for classes (20%)
The final examination will take the form of an oral presentation based on an individual written assignment. Students may choose either to produce a poetic translation or to write an original poem in the foreign language (Polish or Spanish, depending on the student’s native language). During the presentation, students will be required to explain and reflect on both their creative and technical process, discussing the linguistic, stylistic, and translational decisions made during the work. They will also analyze and interpret their text with reference to the relevant theoretical concepts and approaches discussed during the course.
Grading scale for examination assignments:
0–60% – fail
60–70% – satisfactory
70–75% – satisfactory plus
75–85% – good
85–90% – good plus
90–100% – very good
Attendance policy:
students are allowed two unexcused absences
three late arrivals of more than fifteen minutes count as one additional absence
