Elective course:Conversation Analysis 3200-L2-PF-ANK
On the basis of authentic examples of French discourse the following topics will be discussed.
- transcription conventions (turn-taking, pauses and hesitations, rhythm, intonation, voice, gestures, discourse markers)
- the organization of an utterance, taking the floor
- overall structure of conversation: beginning a conversation, the corpus, closing a conversation
- the structure of conversation: adjacency pairs
- topical cohesion
- politeness (the concept of 'face' and 'territory', politeness-positive and negative)
- formulaic speech, rituals
- forms of address
- emotions in speech (recognition, indicators, management of)
- intercultural approaches: breakdown of communication resulting from misunderstandings, cultural differences.
During the class audio- and video materials will be used.
STUDENT WORKLOAD:
Classes – 30 hours.
Preparation for classes – 15 hours.
Preparation for the final test - 10 hours
Total: 55 hours (2 ECTS).

Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes:
(within knowledge category) students know the basic concepts and theories used in conversation analysis;
(within skills category) students can use conversation analysis tools to examine on their own a chosen oral interaction;
(within attitudes category) students are aware of the complex and multilevel character of oral interactions. They are also aware of the possibility of cross-cultural differences and misunderstandings at every level of oral interaction.

Course requirements:
The pre-condition for the obtaining a passing grade is attendance. Two unjustified absences per semester are allowed.
Passing grade on the basis of a written test containing open questions.
Retake credit under the same conditions as a credit in the first term.
