Teaching systems and language skills language B - Italian 3200-L2-NSSJBW
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to selected topics in Italian language teaching. The class includes the following topics:
- foreign language teaching methodology and Italian language: a review of the most important proposals of Italian educationalists and linguists;
- learners' characteristics;
- the concept of communicative and intercultural competence;
- teaching Italian as a foreign language and the choice of teaching methodology (communicative approach, action approach, CLIL);
- planning the teaching process: preparing the timetable, organising work in Italian lessons, developing learners' communicative and intercultural competence; developing learners' language skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking;
- evaluating students' achievements and correcting errors;
- using new technologies in the process of teaching Italian language;
- review and analysis of textbooks and teaching materials for Italian language teaching.
Student's workload:
Class participation: 30 hours
Preparation for classes and the final exam: 20 hours
Project preparation: 10 hours

Learning outcomes
In terms of knowledge, the student knows and understands:
-teacher's content and educational competences, including the need for professional development, also with the use of information and communication technology, and adapting the way of communication to the level of students' development and stimulating students' cognitive activity (D.1.W4);
-conventional and unconventional teaching strategies, including activating methods and a project method, the process of learning by doing, scientific discovery or inquiry and the student's research work, as well as the principles of selection of teaching methods typical of Italian classes (D.1.W5)
-methodology of implementing educational content in language classes - content and methodological solutions, good practices, adapting activities to the needs and abilities of students with different potential and learning styles (D.1.W6)
-ways of organising the space of a classroom or a class group (also remotely), taking into account the principles of universal design: teaching resources (textbooks and educational packages), teaching aids - the selection and use of educational resources, including electronic and foreign language ones, educational applications of the media and information and communication technology (D.1.W8)
-the role of diagnosis, control and assessment in teaching work; assessment and its types: current, semester and annual assessment, internal and external assessment; functions of assessment (D.1.W10);
-examinations at the end of an educational stage and ways of constructing tests, examinations and other tools useful in the process of assessing students within the Italian course (D.1.W11).
In terms of skills the student is able to:
-create teaching situations for activity and development of students' interests (D.1.U5);
-choose strategies for working in the classroom and teaching means, including information and communication technology and students' different educational needs (D.1.U7)
- assess students' achievements (D.1.U8);
-construct a test to assess given student skills (D.1.U9);
-recognise typical student errors in Italian and use them in the teaching process (D.1.U10);
-conduct a preliminary diagnosis of the student's skills (D.1.U11).
In terms of social competence the student is ready to:
-adapt work strategies to the needs and different students' learning styles (D.1.K1);
-promote responsible and critical use of digital media and respect for intellectual property rights (D.1.K4);
-shape students' collaboration skills, including group problem solving (D.1.K5)
-develop in students curiosity, activity and cognitive independence as well as logical and critical thinking (D.1.K7)
-stimulate students to lifelong learning through independent work (D.1.K9).
Assessment criteria
- attendance and work in the classroom (two absences are allowed)
- preparing a project showing the ability to use the discussed knowledge, techniques and materials in practice (lesson plan)
- final test

- over 95% - 5!
- 90%-95% - 5
- 85%-89% - 4+
- 80%-84% - 4
- 70%-79% - 3+
- 60%-69% - 3
Practical placement
This course prepares you for an internship.
