Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student is familiar with (a) the historical and social background, the main intellectual currents and the works of leading writers of the discussed periods (b) typical literary genres and pertinent literary terms.
KNOWLEDGE:
- is familiar with the characteristics of discussed literary periods (K_W02, S_W05, S_W09)
- is familiar with the characteristic features defining style and form of literary and poetic texts of Swedish literature until 1870 (K_W04, S_W09)
- has additional knowledge regarding the most important social, historical and cultural events connected with the discussed texts
Upon completing the course, the student:
- knows the most important authors and texts of Swedish (K_W05, K_W10, S_W10)
SKILLS:
Upon completing the course, the student is able to:
- read and comprehend works of early Swedish literature (Old English and Middle English texts in Modern Swedish translation) (K_U01, S_U01)
- individually or under teacher’s supervision acquire knowledge on the history of Swedish literature (K_U03, S_U02, S_U03)
- distinguish and identify literary, stylistic and poetic elements in literary texts from the discussed periods (K_U04, K_05, S_U05)
- formulate his/her own conclusions regarding the interpretation of the discussed texts (K_U06, S_U08)
SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPETENCIES
Upon completing the course, the student:
- is ready to work in a group or cooperate with others and discuss his/her conclusions after reading literary texts (K_K01, S_K02, S_K04)
- is prepared to individually expand his/her knowledge of history of English literature and skills in reading and analysing literary texts (K_K03, S_K01)
- is capable of self-improving his/her knowledge of the history of English literature (K_K03, S_K03)
- is aware of cultural differences between Swedish and Polish literature (K_K04, S_K06)
- appreciates Swedish cultural heritage and is aware of his/her responsibility for its preservation (K_K05, S_K10)
- participates in the cultural life of Sweden (K_K06, S_K10)
- commands an expanded vocabulary of the Swedish language (K_U10, S_U11)
FORMS OF WORK
If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the University.
Assessment criteria
The course finishes with an examination ('zaliczenie na stopień') covering the entire material - oral or written.
The examination is taken in Swedish, but only the student's knowledge, not his/her command of the language, is assessed.
When the number of allowed absences is exceeded, the student will be given extra-tasks aimed at making up the missing material from the classes. In case the number of absences exceeds 50% of the component’s contact hours results in a negative grade from that component at the end of the year.
