Literature of C (French) Language Area - level 2 3200-L2-LCF2
The History of French Literature is a two-semester course aimed at introducing the history of French literature, taking into account periodization, the characteristics of individual literary and artistic currents and presenting, for each of them, the works of representative writers of subsequent periods - in a concise and synthetic approach.
The specific objectives are as follows:
1. presentation of the main literary eras and currents and outstanding authors;
2. discussion of the evolution of literary genres and genres in subsequent periods, taking into account issues related to literary language and style;
3. acquiring the ability to analyze a selected literary text (or fragment) taking into account the elements of form and content.
The main literary and artistic directions will be presented, which will be discussed on selected examples of literary texts.
For linguistic reasons, selected texts (their fragments) from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance will be read in the modernized version of French, while texts from the seventeenth century and later (up to the present day) will be read in their original versions.
The winter semester will include
1. balanced characteristics of the periods of the history of French literature from the Middle Ages to the end of the eighteenth century;
2. characteristics of selected groups of texts and literary works of French writers from the Middle Ages to the end of the eighteenth century;
3. reading several literary texts (their fragments), representative of selected literary and artistic directions.
The summer semester will include
1. characteristics of the main literary and artistic trends in the history of French literature of the nineteenth, twentieth and early twenty-first centuries;
2. presentation of the work of French writers associated with successive literary and artistic movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries;
3. reading a dozen or so literary texts (their fragments), representative of the literary and artistic movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries,
4. indicating a few selected authors of French contemporary times (the first decades of the 21st century).

1. the student is able to describe and define the most important features of literary and artistic currents in the history of French literature;
2. the student is able to enumerate and assign the most important French writers to literary and artistic currents
3. the student is able to connect the work of various authors/writers from successive periods of the history of French literature;
4. the student is able to propose elements of interpretation of a literary work on the basis of recognized elements and knowledge of historical and literary issues;
5. The student is aware of the importance of literature as an integral part of French (European, world) culture.
Program effects
K_W01 has structured basic knowledge in the field of science and scientific disciplines specific to the field of study – applied linguistics.
K_W02 has structured basic knowledge, covering selected areas in the field of science and scientific disciplines, appropriate to the field of study, oriented towards practical applications in the selected sphere of activity
K_W03 knows the basic terminology of the fields of science and scientific disciplines specific to applied linguistics.
K_U09 has the ability to substantively argue using the views of other authors and formulating conclusions.
K_U10 is able to communicate using various communication channels and techniques, with specialists in the fields of science and scientific disciplines appropriate to the field of study, in Polish and a foreign language
K_U11 has the ability to prepare typical written works in Polish and a foreign language, considered to be basic for fields of science and scientific disciplines, appropriate to the field of study, concerning specific issues, using basic theoretical approaches, as well as various sources
K_U12 has the ability to prepare oral presentations, in Polish and a foreign language, on specific issues, using basic theoretical approaches, as well as various sources
K_K02 is able to interact and work in a group, taking on different roles in it
K_K03 is able to properly determine priorities for the implementation of the task specified by him or others
K_K05 is aware of the responsibility for preserving the cultural heritage of the region, the country, Europe
Student workload in each of the 2 semesters:
– 30 hours of participation in the seminar (the so-called contact seminars),
– 60 hours of own work (preparation for the exam, reading literary texts, work necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes).
Assessment criteria
Passing the seminar - on the basis of attendance and active participation in classes, final grade based on exams. Exams are held after the winter semester (winter session) and after the summer semester (summer session).
The exams require:
– knowledge of the issues discussed during the seminar;
– reading full versions of literary works (novels, theatre works, collections of short stories or collections of poetry), selected by the student, in addition to the texts discussed during the classes:
- during the exam in the winter session: 2 readings – from the period from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century.
- during the exam in the summer session: 3 readings - 1 work from the 19th century and 2 from the 20th/21st century.
The requirements for knowledge of the material and reading are the same during revision sessions.
2 unexcused absences in the semester are allowed, exceeding 4 absences (excused or not) makes it impossible to take the exam and the need to repeat classes.
