Literature of B (Italian) Language Area - level 1 3200-L2-LBW1
During two semesters, students learn the basics of the history of Italian literature from the Middle Ages to the present day, as well as the main works of Italian literature representative of a given era.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the European context of Italian culture and literature over the centuries and the role played by Italian representatives of the world of culture in creating Europe's cultural heritage. During the course, students will read and analyze the short fragments of Italian prose and poetry, and critical texts from Italian anthology.

First semester:
1. Introduction, Old Italian literature: the creation of Italian language and literature;
2. From Veronese Riddle to "Duecento" (Dolce stil novo)
3. Italy's Three Crowns: Dante, Bocaccio, Petrarch;
4. Humanism period;
5. Renessaince period;
4. Baroque literature;
Second semester:
1. Arcadia literature and The Enlightenment literature;
2. Neoclassicism;
3. Romanticism;
4. Realism (Verismo);
5. Modernism (Decadentismo);
6. Literary avant-garde;
7. Fascism period literature;
8. Second half of the 20th century.
Classroom activities - 60 hrs (2 ECTS)
Self-study – 60 hrs (2 ECTS), including:
- self-study –20 hrs
- preparation for tasks verifying the learning outcomes - 25 hrs
- preparation in-class presentation/homework –15 hrs

Student:
- has a basic knowledge of epochs and trends in Italian literature (K1_W01);
- knows the most important creators and thinkers of different periods of Italian literature (K1_W10);
- knows the main development directions and the most important new achievements in the field of literature (K1_W04);
- knows the basic terminology in the field of literature (K1_W02);
- knows and understands the functioning of cultural institutions in Italy (K1_W12)
Skills
Student:
- can critically analyze literary and critical texts on Italian culture (K1_U01);
- can analyze literary texts and interpret them in a creative way, finding the right literary, historical and cultural context for them (K1_U03);
- can apply the basic research and interpretation methods applicable to literary and critical texts about Italian culture and can apply the acquired skills in team projects, also in interdisciplinary projects (K1_U10);
Social competence
Student:
- is ready to adequately identify cultural differences existing between Italian and Polish literature (K1_K01);
- is ready to critically assess their knowledge in the field of Italian literature, appreciates the importance of substantive argumentation in solving research and practical problems (in professional situations) (K1_K02);
- is ready to participate in the cultural life of Italy and Europe, using both traditional and modern forms and media (K1_K03);
- appreciates the tradition and cultural heritage of Italy and is aware of the responsibility for their preservation (K1_K04).
Assessment criteria
Presence control. Two absences are allowed each semester. Continuous assessment (ongoing preparation for classes, activity) – 10%
Oral exam after each semester - 90%.
The exam is passed if the student answers two questions at least enough

• more than 90% – 5
• 85%-89% – 4+
• 80%-84% – 4
• 70%-79% – 3+
• 60%-69% – 3
