Communicative Competence Development of Language C, Italian for beginners, level 3 3200-L2-KKKCW03a
The course is a continuation of studying Italian at intermediate level. Its components are concentrated on developing language skills in vocabulary and speaking, grammar and pragmatics, listening, reading and academic writing.
The aim of the course is to develop and improve the students’ communicative competence in Language at the intermediate level, equivalent to level B2 within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages at the end of the 1st semester. The teaching process stimulates integrated development of several communicative competences, i.e.: pragmatic, sociolinguistic, intercultural and metalinguistic. The content of the course conforms to the level of language skills among students and is designed for the studies at the Applied Linguistics, especially to professional requirements in academic, glottodidactic and translation domains.
The practical Italian course includes the following components, held by teachers specialized in teaching different language skills:
- grammar and pragmatics;
- vocabulary / speaking / listening;
- academic writing / reading;
- integrated skills.
The grammar / pragmatics module covers the following topics:
1st semester:
1. the use of past tenses: imperfetto and passato prossimo;
2. past time: trapassato prossimo; grading of adjectives: regular and irregular forms;
3. relative pronouns, combined pronouns: pronomi relativi and pronomi combinati;
4. future tense: futuro semplice and futuro anteriore; impersonal forms of verbs, the use of the pronouns ci and ne;
5. present tense mode: congiuntivo presente;
6. connecting mode: congiuntivo presente and congiuntivo passato;
7. joining mode: congiuntivo imperfetto and trapassato;
8. place of the adjective in the nominal group and its meaning;
2nd semester:
9. use of time passato remoto and trapassato remoto, compliance of grammatical times;
10. conditional sentences: periodi ipotetici, personal and non-personal form: si impersonale;
11. dependent and independent speech: discorso diretto e indiretto;
12. compliance of times in indicative and connecting mode;
13. passive voice: si passivante, non-personal sentences - sentence equivalents: forme implicite.
The vocabulary / speaking / listening module assumes the development of vocabulary and the improvement of receptive skills - listening comprehension, and productive skills such as oral speaking skills. The goal of this part of the course is to develop these language skills by using a variety of materials, both authentic (audiovisual materials, such as movies, radio and television programs, songs, interviews; texts from websites - including press), as well as exercises taken from textbooks to learn Italian at B2 level and exercises developed by the teacher. Authentic materials are designed to familiarize students with the socio-cultural reality of Italy and thus allow the development of intercultural competence.
The lexical material related to the above module covers the following issues:
1. Italian music: modern and old;
2. literature: topics and types of books, favorite reading;
3. customs, habits and habits;
4. natural environment, climate, ecology;
5. family; immigration problems
6. Italian cuisine and folklore;
7. clothing and interior design;
8. politics and history;
9. ancient and modern art;
10. Italian cinema;
11.analysis of the most important issues related to mass media on the example of television, Internet and press.
Writing and speaking skills accompany the abovementioned lexical and grammar issues and are implemented in the order indicated. Students must master the skill of speaking on the above topics and the ability to prepare in writing:
1. ability to interview and express one's own opinions and views;
2. describing the plot of books and films; writing reviews;
3. analysis of statistical charts, comparing data;
4. editing a tourist guide;
5. communication on the Internet;
6. expressing doubts, hypotheses, needs and requirements;
7. writing official and unofficial emails;
8. essay writing on political and historical topics;
9. preparation of the script for the film;
10. writing essays on any topic.
The complementary skills module covers the following topics:
- collecting and consolidating information obtained during classes from other modules (supplementing the lexical resource by reading press articles, fragments of literature, and discussing and discussing the mentioned texts in class; supplementing grammar knowledge according to the issues intended for the second year of study);
- developing pragmatic competence through exercises in the form of games, quizzes and other exercises in pairs and teams;
- preparing short texts intended e.g. for blog, website;
- preparation of projects in short videos introducing the Italian culture to the Polish recipient or Polish culture to the Italian recipient.
Course workload:
Classroom activities: 120hrs (1st semester), 120hrs (2nd semester) = 4 ECTS (in each semester)
Total: 240hrs = 8 ECTS (30hrs = 1 ECTS)
Self study – 90 hrs (in each semester), including:
- preparation for the classes – 40 hrs;
- preparation for the final tests – 10 hrs - and for the final exam – 10 hrs.
Total: 180 hrs = 6 ECTS

KNOWLEDGE
The student is expected to:
- have the Italian language knowledge at B2 level, know the linguistic
structure as a system, understands its specificity (K1_W01);
- know morphosyntactic structures, understands oral statements at B2
level; knows word definitions, synonyms and Italian idioms (K1_W01);
- have a grounded knowledge of lexical and grammar issues indicated in
the course description (K1_W03);
- know and understand elements of the Italian culture, understand the
role of language in the intercultural and cultural communication,
understand cultural differences between Poland and Italy, have a good
knowledge of the Italian reality and socioeconomic conditions in Italy
(K1_W10, K1_W07, K1_W11).
SKILLS
The student is expected to:
- have the Italian language knowledge at B2 level according to CEFR,
also in typical professional situations which require the knowledge of
techniques, strategies and different communication channels (K1_U05,
K1_U09);
- analyze in a critical way texts as cultural products, search for authentic
texts in Italian, prepare their analysis, evaluation and selection; develop
professional skills in Italian (K1_U01);
- be able to develop skills in the Italian language on their own, according
to the teacher’s indications; know how to assess the usefulness of
particular sources of information, e.g. web dictionaries, corpora, articles
etc. (K1_U01);
- translate short oral and written texts from Italian to Polish and vice
versa (K1_U06);
- identify characteristic cultural elements and interpret in a proper way
phenomena regarding the Italian language, react properly in every
communicative situation, considering cultural context and using
customary expressions (K1_U03);
- justify their opinion, using other authors’ views and formulate
conclusions in written and spoken Italian (K1_U07);
- prepare written assignments in Italian on discussed subjects (K1_U06);
- prepare speeches in Italian, using properly selected source materials
(K1_U07).
SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPETENCIES
The student is expected to:
- be ready to cooperate and work in a group, assuming various roles and
respecting rules of good communication in Italian (K1_K06);
- be ready to specify priorities and plan activities which serve to realize particular
linguistic, communicative and professional objectives; understand the need of
self-study and continuous upgrading of qualifications (K1_K01);
- be ready to identify and solve properly communication dilemmas in Italian and
Polish which result from the asymmetry of both linguistic systems and cultural
differences (K1_K01);
- be ready to participate in the cultural life of Poland and Italy for the promotion of both cultures, using both traditional and modern forms and media (K1_K03);
- be ready to participate in Polish and Italian cultural life, promoting both
cultures thanks to traditional and modern forms of communication and media
(K1_K04).
Assessment criteria
Methods of assessment of students’ work:
- assessment of the active participation in the classes (doing tasks in the classroom) and the preparation for the classes;
- homework;
- mid-term tests;
- written final tests in all course components, a final oral exam.

The final grade is the average of:
- grades obtained for completing individual course modules. At the end, the teachers of individual KKK components give a grade, taking into account the 50% to 50% rule, i.e. half = work per semester on the basis of partial grades + half = grade from the final test (exam)
- grades from the oral examination conducted during the session.
Then the coordinator calculates the average of these two grades, which is the final grade for the subject entered into USOS.
The progress assessment and the final exam grade are established in accordance with the following scale:
0-59% = failed, (2.0)
60-67% = satisfactory (3.0)
68-75% = satisfactory plus (3.5)
76-83% = good (4.0)
84-91% = good plus (4.5)
92-98% = very good (5.0)
99-100% = very good! (5.0!)
Rules of cooperation of teachers and students:
For every 30hrs of each course component:
- two unjustified absences are allowed. If students are absent more than twice during a semester (including the fact of being absent for justified reasons), they are obliged to notify this fact to the lecturer who will inform them on other form of making up the classes. More than 50% absences may result in not receiving a failing grade;
- students are allowed to notify the fact of not being prepared for the classes (e.g. not having read texts, not having materials etc.) three times in each semester;
- students can take a final exam after having passed all tests. Students have the right to retake twice each written test.
