Contrastive Grammar - Spanish 3200-L2-GKH
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic notions in contrastive grammar of Spanish and Polish, the basic grammatical diferences between both languages in the verbal and nouns system, taking into account pragmatical and stylistic conditions.
1. Basic characteristics of the Polish and Spanish verbal systems
2. The relation between grammatical categories of tense and aspect and the Aktionsart.
3. Comparative analysis of Spanish past tenses 'pretérito' and 'copretérito' and non perfective and perfective aspect in Polish: difference and similarities (tense vs aspect).
4. Basic characteristics of mood in Spanish and Polish: 'Subjuntivo' vs. 'indicativo' in independent sentences
5. Personal Pronouns in Polish and Spanish
6. The category of case: indirect and direct objects.
7. The demostrative pronouns in Spanish and Polish
8. Functional characteristics of the article in Spanish and its possible equivalents in Polish language.
Contact hours (in-class): 15 hrs
Self-study/individual work:
- working with assigned texts – 6 hrs
- revising for test – 6 hrs

In the event of inability to conduct the traditional in-class lessons, the course’s contact hours will be conducted remotely with the use of the devices recommended by the University of Warsaw

Knowlegde
The student possesses well-ordered knowledge about major similarities and differences between language structures in Spanish and Polish (K_W01).
The student has the theoretical knowledge about contrastive grammar terminology of both languages, Spanish and Polish. (K1_W02)
Skills
The student is able to select, analyse and evaluate papers in contrastive grammar, using Spanish sources.
The student is able to identify the most frequent interferences and negative and positive transfer between Polish and Spanish (K1_U08).
Socio-cultural competences
He is ready to cooperate and work in a group, assume various roles and respect rules of good communication in Spanish (K1_K01);
He is ready to identify and properly solve communicative dilemmas between Spanish and Polish, which result from the asymmetry in linguistic systems and cultural variety (K1_K04);
Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria- in class
- continuous assessment and home assignments: 20% of the grade
- final exam: 80 % of the grade. A student must obtain at least 60% to get a positive grade.
All tests and assignments are graded according to the following criteria:
0-59% = failed, (2.0)
60-67% = satisfactory (3.0)
68-75% = satisfactory plus (3.5)
76-83% = good (4.0)
84-91% = good plus (4.5)
92-98% = very good (5.0)
99-100% = very good! (5.0!)
Students are required to attend all the classes of the course. The allowed number of absences is 2 per 30 contact hours. When the number of allowed absences is exceeded, the student will be given extra-tasks aimed at making up the missing material from the classes. In case the number of absences exceeds 50% results in a negative grade from that component at the end of the year.
