Introduction to Specialised Translations – Polish/German (C) 3200-L2-2WTSCN
The basic aim of the course is the transfer of meaning of the expression in the original language to the target language so that the text is created in accordance with the rules of the target language.
Within this course the student should get acquainted with the basic terminology and different kinds of texts for special purposes. Students learn how to apply relevant translation strategies.
Course Workload:
Total: 2 ECTS, including
Classroom activities – 30 hrs (1 ECTS)
Self-study – 30 hrs (1 ECTS)
including:
- preparation for classes- 15 hrs
- preparation for the final test – 10 hrs
30h + 25h = 55h (2 ECTS)
If classroom learning is impossible, the classes will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and other tools recommended by the University.

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE
The student is expected to:
- know the systemic structure of the language, have a basic knowledge of the place and importance of general and applied linguistics in the science system, have a general grasp of the subject and the methodological specificity of the field of applied linguistics (K1_W01),
- know and understand typical grammar terms, have a basic knowledge of selected pragmatic conditions within the Polish language and two foreign languages, recognize characteristic structures of of specialized texts, be able to apply appropriate translation strategies (S1.2_W04)
SKILLS
The student is expected to:
- be able to critically analyse texts as cultural products, to search, analyse, evaluate and select authentic texts in two foreign languages and develop professional skills in the field of applied linguistics (K1_U01),
- be able to solve complex problems and carry out different tasks within specialized translation, by using given tools and methods in the professional communication area (S1.2_U01).
SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPETENCY
The student is expected to:
- be prepared to think and act in an entrepreneurial manner working on translation, terminology or teaching (K1_K08),
- be prepared to carry out translation projects, to determine the expected workload and to search for relevant language data (S1.2_K04).
Assessment criteria
Method of Assessment:
- steady evaluation (activity), preparation for the lessons,
- homeworks,
- tests
- final written exam.
Assessment criteria:
The final grade comprises:
- steady evaluation (activity) – 50%
- written final test – 50%.
The overall result is established in accordance with the following scale:
51%-60% = 3
61%-70% = 3+
71%-80% = 4
81%-90% = 4+
91%-100% = 5
Three unauthorized absences allowed in the semester.
