Introduction to Translation Studies 3200-L2-0WT
The aim of the course is to present the history of translation and translation studies as an academic discipline, the present state of the translator's profession, linguistic and intercultural theories of translation, principal types of translation (written translation-interpreting-machine translation), principles guiding the evaluation of translation (translation as product) and the ethical dimension of translation. Detailed syllabus comprises the following topics: history of translation and the development of translation theory, literal vs. free translation (historical overview), linguistic and cultural untranslatability, types of translation as distinguished by source text, types of translation equivalence (among others Nida, Newmark, House, Koller, Komissarov, Kade), adequacy, acceptability and faithfulness of translation, translator's competences and roles, translation strategies and techniques (among others Vinay and Darbelnet).

KNOWLEDGE
Upon completion of the course, the student:
- knows the structure of the language as a system, has basic knowledge of the place and importance of linguistics (general and applied) and the place of translation studies in the academic system, and understands their subject specificity K1_W01;
- knows basic terminology in linguistics (general and applied) and translation studies, K1_W02;
- has advanced knowledge of the stages of linguistics development, as well as the stages of the development of translation studies as academic field from the historical perspective, understands the complex nature of language and its complexity and historical variability K1_W03;
- knows and understands the specificity of contemporary paradigms of linguistics (general and applied), and above all translation studies, has a structured general knowledge of the theory and methodology of linguistics and translation studies K1_W05;
- knows and understands the relations between translaton studies and other academic disciplines K1_W06;
- knows and understands cultural differences that are an important factor in the formation of multicultural societies in the modern world, knows in general the socio-economic and legal realities in the areas related to the studied languages K1_W11;
- knows and understands the principles of professional ethics K1_W13;
- knows the norms, procedures and good practices applied in the area of professional activity K1_W15.
SKILLS
Upon completion of the course, the student:
- has elementary research skills, is able to formulate research problems and is able to use research tools in translation studies; is able to select appropriate methods to solve problems in translation studies K1_U02;
- is able to argue using the views of other authors and formulate conclusions in oral and written form in Polish and in two foreign languages K1_U04;
- is able to apply his/her theoretical knowledge of translation in typical professional situations, including team projects, as well as interdisciplinary K1_U10 projects.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
At the end of the course, the student:
- is ready to adequately identify and resolve inter-language communication dilemmas, especially translation dilemmas, caused by the asymmetry of language systems and cultural differences, following ethical behaviour patterns and consulting experts K1_K01;
- is ready to critically evaluate his own state of knowledge in the field of translation studies, appreciates the importance of substantive argumentation in solving research and practical problems (in professional situations) K1_K02.
Effects related to specialisation: S_W14; S_W15, S_U12, S_U14, S_K08, S_K09, i.e.:
- knows basic terminology on translation theory and translation methods
- has a structured theoretical knowledge of the translation process, including specialised translation, its types and specificities, and knows basic translation techniques
- has basic research skills in text linguistics; recognizes the structure of the text and its situational and cultural conditions; is able to conduct a multi-level analysis of a text with a medium degree of terminology
- is able to use and properly apply (general and detailed) translation strategies and techniques in specialised translation and interpretating from B and C languages into Polish (and vice versa) and from B to C (and vice versa)
- understands the need to improve the translator's skills throughout his/her life
- correctly identifies and resolves dilemmas related to the profession of translator and interpreter.
Assessment criteria
Learning outcomes evaluation procedures:
- active participation in lectures
- written test or oral exam (it depends from the lecturer) at the end of the semester
- Two absences allowed (if the number is exceeded, the student should ask the teacher for extra assignments; if the number of absences exceeds 50%, the student fails the course in accordance with the Rules of Study).

90% – 86% – 4,5
85% – 76% – 4
75% – 71% – 3,5
70% – 60% – 3
below this level – 2 (unsatisfactory).
