(in Polish) Wstęp do nauki o mediach 3200-L1-NS-WNM
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the discipline of media studies by presenting its basic characteristics: main research areas, methods, problems. The main terms and concepts will be presented, which will allow to obtain basic knowledge of media studies and related areas (communication).
The material presented in class includes the following topics:
- Introduction: media, media science/media studies vs. other scientific disciplines
- Media- definition. Development of media, media and protomedia. Orality, literacy, corporality.
- Mass media. Media in social communication. The scope of social communication, means and forms. Models of communication. Media fact. Media, politics, society, communities. The development of information society.
- The digital revolution - consequences for communication. Convergence. Colonization.
- Media creators, past and present. Media market. Regulators.
- Recipients of media.
- Media narratives.
- Media and activism (e.g. social, cultural, political).
- Media content in the era of technological development - threats (fake news, post-truth, bots, trolls).

Student workload:
30 h - attendance and activity in classes - 1 ECTS
45-60 h - individual student work - 2 ECTS, including
a) 20-30 h - reading and analyzing assigned texts
b) 25-30 h - exam preparation
