Modular facultative lecture:The culture of Scandinavia 3200-L1-MPF-KSK
Comprehensive humanistic approach to social and cultural issues with reference to Scandinavia and other nordic countries.
The course discusses the following:
- political, economic and social history;
- history of art and culture historia sztuki i kultury;
- contemporary politics and economy;
- reality and social issues of contemporary Scandinavia;
- national identity;
- folklore, habits and customs;
- languages.
All sort sof audiovisual aids accompany the course (e.g. clips from films, TV programs, debates, songs and other recordings), which help to develop knowledge of the history and culture of Scandinavia and introduce the inter-cultural elements.
During the classes students are encouraged to express their views relating to the material covered.
When the number of allowed absences is exceeded, the student will be given extra-tasks aimed at making up the missing material from the classes. In case the number of absences exceeds 50% of the component’s contact hours results in a negative grade from that component at the end of the year.

After the course completion the students will
Knowledge:
- know most important events and persona from the political, economic and social history of Scandinavia (S_W10);
- have basic knowledge on selected historical, social, religious, philosophical and political issues that enables development of a given cultural (K_W03, S_W10);
- have basic knowledge of cultural institutions and cultural life of contemporary Scandinavia (K1_W05, S_W03)
Skills:
- be able to recognize characteristic cultural elements and interpret in a proper way the ongoing socio-historical changes with reference to the realities of Scandinavia (K_U05, S_U02)
- be able to present the chosen issues with a debatable approach, including different points of view (K_U06, S_U05, S_U11);
- be able to conduct a cross-sectional analyses of the chosen issues (K_U01);
- be able to point events and persona being currently controversial and take sides in debates regarding the aforementioned (K_U05, S_U02);
- be able to describe the basic rules reigning the contemporary political system of Scandinavia (K_U05, S_U02);
- be able to recognize the most important persona of the current public life (K_U05, S_U02);
- be able to prepare the oral presentations _U09, S_U05);
Social competences:
- be able to work in a group, in pairs, taking assigned roles (functions); be able to lead a small team (e.g. K_K01, K_K02);
- be ready to assign priorities and plan the actions enabling carrying out specific tasks (K_K03);
- be ready to participate in cultural life of Poland and Scandinavia aiming at mutual promotion of cultures with the use of traditional and modern ways and means of communication (K_K06);
- feel the responsibility for the knowledge passed over not only with reference to the foreign language but also to cultural issues and the reality of the language area (S_K06);
- be aware of the cultural differences between Poland and Scandinavia (e.g. K1_K06);
Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria:
The final grade comprises:
- 40% comprises final test grade;
- 60% comprises the grade from classes, tests, homework;
(40% + 60% = 100%)
2. Final test exam at the end of the classes.
The overall result is established in accordance with the following scale:
0-64% - 2
65-74% - 3
75-79% - 3,5
80-85% - 4
86-91% - 4,5
92-100% - 5
Rules regarding the cooperation between the teacher and students
1. It is accepted to miss 2 classes in a term without excuses
2. Students should be prepared for all classes. It is possible to make excuses for being unprepared for 2 classes in a term (e.g. not having read the texts, forgetting to bring materials etc.)
3. One can approach the final test after completion of all tests given in a term. Students are entitled to take tests twice after failing. Absence during the first tests constitutes a fail at first approach.
