Media at the work of an interpreter

The objective of the course is to show the students how to effectively use software and online resources in translation as well as with the basic concepts of computer-assisted translation.
In particular, the students will learn about the existing bibliographic resources in their foreign language, find out how to efficiently search for information in online resources and develop advanced text editing skills and the ability to use online terminological resources.
Theoretical presentations will be supplemented with extensive demonstrations of the discussed software, functionalities and operations in the form of PowerPoint presentations and direct demonstrations of the software with the use of a laptop and an overhead projector. The chief form of work will involve the students doing tasks on computers.

Prerequisites (description)
The student should be able to operate the computer, in particular the Internet browser and the Office suite, to at least a basic degree.

At the end of the course, the student is expected to:

knows and understands the principles of the translator’s professional ethics (K1_W13)knows the standards, procedures and good practices applicable in professional translation (K1_W15) has fundamental knowledge of the principles of establishing and developing various forms of business on the translation market (K1_W16) knows and understands the main directions of development and the crucial achievements in translation studies with regard to languages for special purposes and literary texts (S1.2_W03) understands the model of translation and translation equivalence, knows various types of translation and interpreting, knows and understands translation principles and strategies applicable in the language pair English and Polish (S1.2_W05) knows and understands the relations between translation studies and other academic disciplines, understands their interdisciplinary character, is aware of the possibilities to use media in the translator’s work (S1_W13) understands the need for self-education and for deepening their knowledge on translation throughout their entire life (S1.2_W15) knows the basic principles of functioning as a translator in various business forms on the home and international market, understands the basic rules of cooperation with institutions that use translation services (S1.2_W16)

is able to communicate in the course language in typical as well as non-standard professional situations which require familiarity with techniques, strategies and various communication channels; is able to prevent conflicts by using language as a communication tool (K2_U05) is able to solve problems and perform tasks related to translation in not entirely predictable circumstances by using appropriate methods and digital tools (K1_U13) can use generally accessible databases and other terminological resources in their work with specialised texts; can evaluate collected terminological data from a selected field of knowledge and professional activity (S1.2_U08) is able to independently find and use in their translation work appropriate media in order to streamline the translation process; has basic ability to use CAT tools, text editing software and spreadsheet software (S1.2_U13)
