Latin 3200-L1-2LAT
The course is aimed at linguistics students who work with specialist texts in foreign languages.
The course aims to prepare students to independently analyze Latin elements in contemporary European languages and to continue working with the Latin language.
The curriculum covers the following topics:
a) mastery of the Latin language system in terms of the basics of phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon;
b) demonstrating the influence of Latin on the syntax and vocabulary of modern languages;
c) showing the connections between Latin and contemporary specialist vocabulary;
d) mastering Latin sentences used today.
When discussing grammatical and lexical material, references are made to the modern languages that students are learning. In addition, students are made aware of linguistic elements that share a common Latin origin, knowledge of which can facilitate the process of translating texts from modern languages. The program also includes references to literature, history, mythology, and art of the ancient world.
Student workload:
30 hours of class attendance = 1 ECTS
60 hours of independent study = 2 ECTS:
• 50 hours of ongoing preparation for classes
• 10 hours of preparation for tests.
If it is not possible to conduct classes in a stationary form, classes will be held using remote communication tools recommended by the University of Warsaw.

KNOWLEDGE:
S1.2_W07 - has basic knowledge of Latin and its influence on the development of modern languages (K1_W03, K1_W07)
S1.2_W08 - has an advanced knowledge of the history of lexicography as a field of knowledge, understands the complex nature of language and its complexity and historical variability, especially in relation to the two foreign languages studied (K1_W03)
SKILLS:
S1.2_U06 - is able to recognize terminology of Latin origin, independently search for the meanings of terms, and skillfully explain concepts from various fields of knowledge and professional activity (K1_U02, K1_U08, K1_U09)
COMPETENCES:
S1.2_K06 - is ready to cooperate in terminology projects both for the purposes of systematizing knowledge in a selected field and for the purposes of translating selected specialist texts (K1_K01, K1_K02, K1_K06, K1_K07)
Assessment criteria
The final course grade is the average of the grades on the two tests (midterm and end-of-term).
The pass threshold for both tests is 60%. Both tests are graded according to the following percentage scale:
0-59% = failed, (2.0)
60-67% = satisfactory (3.0)
68-75% = satisfactory plus (3.5)
76-83% = good (4.0)
84-91% = good plus (4.5)
92-98% = very good (5.0)
99-100% = very good! (5.0!)
In the event of inability to conduct the traditional in-class lessons, the course’s contact hours will be conducted remotely with the use of the devices recommended by the University of Warsaw.
