The aim of the course is for the students to acquire basic skills in translation of non-literary but also non-specialist texts concerning the above topics.
COURSE CONTENTS:
1. Stages of translation, with a special focus on the production and verification of the target text;
2. Translator’s essential skills (evaluating the usefulness of information acquired, methods of working with dictionaries, encyclopaedias etc.; data search on the Internet and evaluation of data quality; application of parallel and analogous texts);
3. Techniques and strategies of translation (paraphrasing, syntactic transformations on sentence and paragraph levels, modifying word order to accommodate the theme-rheme structure, adequate means for providing cohesion;
4. Verifying collocations, using parallel and analogous texts, as well as corpora;
5. Ways of rendering various types of texts, of varied register, style and their markers – a practical approach;
6. Basic skills in the pragmatics of translation – defining the target readership and their needs with reference to a particular situation of translation;
7. Selected specific problems of Polish-French translational confrontation, e.g. non-equivalent vocabulary; proper names in languages A and in C, including the rules of transcription and transliteration; declension of foreign-language proper names in Polish; honorific forms, third-language and third-culture elements in translation.
8. Text revision and proofreading.
9. Editorial requirements.
FORMS OF WORK:
Among others: individual translation (at home, in class) and its discussion; consulting parallel or analogous texts and other resources; error identification and correction in one’s own work and in the exemplifying material provided by the teacher; exercises preventing interference, exercises focusing on enhancing text cohesion and coherence; glossary work; project work (team work).
If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the University.

political/economic/social matters, culture, geography/tourism
CREDIT REQUIREMENTS:
presence and satisfactory performance in class, systematic preparation of translations assigned for the class, timely submission of translations (at least satisfactory) of all assigned texts and completing other tasks including, if required, an end-of-term translation or contribution to project work; satisfactory performance at mid-semester control tests and the final test.

KNOWLEDGE:
After completing the course, students will:
- know the basic terminology of translation studies (K1_W02);
- know and understand the principles of professional ethics for translators (K1_W09, K1_W13);
- know the basic types of written translation, have knowledge of written translation as a process, know and be able to recognise the role of the translator in the act of communication (K1_W01, K1_W02, K1_W07, K1_W11, K1_W12);
- know and understand the basics of the translator's craft, knows translation strategies and techniques, understands their specificity (K1_W02, K1_W04, K1_W06, K1_W07 K1_W08, K1_W10);
- understand the need for self-education and deepening of translation knowledge (K1_W14).
SKILLS:
Upon completion of the course, students will:
- be able to apply their knowledge of translation methodology in practice by independently translating a simple non-specialist text (K1_U03, K1_U05 K1_U06, K1_U07 K1_U08, K1_U09, K1_U10, K1_U12, K1_U13);
- be able to apply a variety of translation techniques and strategies (K1_U01, K1_U02 K1_U03, K1_U04, K1_W06, K1_W07 K1_W08, K1_U10);
- have the ability to reflect on translation, can evaluate translation solutions used by themselves and others, can appreciate manifestations of creative translation (K1_U01, K1_U02, K1_U03, K1_U08);
- be able to use sources, dictionaries and parallel texts, adequately assessing their usefulness in searching for translation equivalents (K1_U01, K1_U02 K1_U05,K1_U06, K1_U08,K1_U10);
- be able to identify the target audience of a translation and apply translation techniques appropriate to their needs and the requirements of the client (K1_U01, K1_U02, K1_U03, K1_U04, K1_U10);
- be able to search for, analyse, evaluate and select authentic texts in a foreign language (K1_U01);
- have an advanced knowledge of the rules of correct Polish and applies them in translation practice (K1_U08);
- take intercultural differences into account in their work as a translator (as in K1_K01);
SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
After completing the course, students will:
- be able to adequately identify and resolve interlingual communication dilemmas caused by asymmetries in language systems and cultural differences (K1_K01);
- appreciate the importance of substantive argumentation in solving practical problems (in professional situations of a translator) (K1_K02);
- be ready to cooperate and work in a group, accepting various roles within it (K1_K05, K1_K06);
- be ready to plan an individual or collective translation project (K1_K02, K1_K03 K1_K04, K1_05, K1_K07);
- be ready to lead a group and accepts responsibility for the results of its work (K1_K02, K1_K03 K1_K04, K1_05, K1_06, K1_K07);
- ensure compliance with the rules of professional ethics for translators and good professional practices (K1_K06, K1_U07);
- be able to critically assess their own translation skills and consult a subject matter expert (K1_K01, K1_K02, K1_K03, K1_K04).
Assessment criteria
Credit is given on basis of: grades for particular assignments; continuous assessment (on basis of attendance, preparedness for the classes, participation in the discussions, individually done translation work, mid-term written tests, final test, end-of-term translation assignment). Each requirement, if assigned, must be fulfilled independently, hence their share in the final mark is not determined.
The criteria of grading written assignments:
99% – 100 – 5!
98% – 91% – 5
90% – 86% – 4,5
85% – 76% – 4
75% – 71% – 3,5
70% – 60% – 3
below this level – 2 (unsatisfactory).
Two absences are allowed. (If the limit is exceeded, the student should ask the teacher for compensation assignments; if the number of absences exceeds 50%, the student fails the course in accordance with the Rules of Study).
