Introduction to Linguistics 3200-L1-0WJ
Classes are intended for the 1st year bachelor students and aim to introduce the students to the main research trends in general and applied linguistics. The range of topics covered includes:
1. Introduction: Basic issues in linguistics
2. Natural language and its definitions
3. Language subsystems: phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis
4. Models of language communication and language functions
5. Historical linguistics
6. The most important research paradigms in contemporary linguistics: structuralism, generativism, cognitivism, pragmatism
7. Language acquisition and multilingualism
Student workload: 30 hours in class, 30 hours individual work (reading, preparation for classes, preparation for the exam)
FORMS OF WORK
If classroom learning is impossible, the workshop will be conducted with the help of distance communication tools, most probably Google Meet and others recommended by the University.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student:
Knowledge:
- knows the structure of language as a system, has basic knowledge about the place and importance of sciences in the field of linguistics (general and applied) in the system of sciences, and also understands their subject-specific specificity (K1-W01;
- knows the basic terminology in the field of linguistics (general and applied) (K1_W02);
- knows the stages of development of linguistics as a field of knowledge in historical terms, understands the complex nature of language as well as its complexity and historical variability, (K1_W03);
- outlines the main directions of development and the most important new scientific achievements in the field of linguistics (general and applied) (K1_W04);
- knows and understands the specificity of contemporary linguistics paradigms (general and applied), has ordered general knowledge in the field of theory and methodology in the field of linguistics (K1_W05);
Skills:
- has elementary research skills, is able to formulate research problems and is able to use research tools of applied linguistics (in the field of linguistics subdivisions according to the selected module); is able to properly choose methods to solve problems within a selected field (K1_U02);
- has the ability to argue using the views of other authors and to formulate oral and written applications in Polish (K1_U04);
- has the ability to prepare written essays in Polish using the basic theories of applied linguistics and literature (K1_U06);
Social competence:
- is ready to critically assess his own knowledge in the field of applied linguistics and literature, appreciates the importance of substantive argumentation in solving research and practical problems (in professional situations) (K1_K02).
