History of Polish music in the 18th and 19th centuries 3106-ZDMP-W
The aim of the classes in this subject is to present a panorama of the most important phenomena of Polish musical culture in the 18th and 19th centuries against the background of the changing conditions of Polish culture at the time (the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the partitions and the emigration movement).
The course is divided into four cross-sectional thematic blocks:
1. Polish opera in the Saxon period, the times of the king Stanisław August Poniatowski, the Duchy of Warsaw, the Kingdom of Poland, with particular emphasis on the works of J.A. Hasse, M. Kamieński, J. Stefani, J. Elsner, K. Kurpiński and S. Moniuszko.
2. the oeuvre of Fryderyk Chopin, including such issues as its periodization, the style brillant in the context of the activity of other Polish composers-pianists (e.g. F. Lessel, M. Szymanowska), the Main School of Music in the perspective of the development of Polish musical education in the 19th century, the panorama of cultivated genres, the most outstanding composer after Chopin - J. Zarębski
3. other genres of instrumental music - including symphonic music from the Enlightenment to the second half of the 19th century (through examples from the works of J. Elsner, I.F. Dobrzyński to Z. Noskowski and I.J. Paderewski) or profiles of Polish violinists (F. Janiewicz, K. Lipiński, H. Wieniawski)

Learning outcomes
Participation in the lecture should produce the following effects:
- knowledge of the most important processes shaping the development of Polish musical culture in the 18th and 19th centuries in the perspective of the changing political and economic situation of the Polish lands
- acquaintance and understanding of the role of the most important works for the Polish musical culture of those times: operas and other stage music genres, F. Chopin's piano works in brillant and romantic style, symphonic and religious works
- in-depth knowledge of the works of F. Chopin with the ability to distinguish aurally the characteristic musical idioms typical of the most important genres he wrote: sonatas, ballades and scherzos, polonaises, mazurkas, waltzes, etudes, nocturnes
- ability to characterise the most important genres of Polish stage music as well as forms and genres of instrumental and religious music, seen from the perspective of local conditions and in a European context
- a readiness to take responsibility for the preservation of the heritage of Polish culture from the 18th to the 19th century
Assessment criteria
The first step to passing the course is attendance at classes (absences must be excused).
Classes conclude with a written examination, part of which is an auditory test consisting in the recognition of musical idioms specific to the works of F. Chopin. A list of representative works by Chopin to be audited is presented no later than 2 weeks after the beginning of the course.
Materials from the lecture (possible presentations, audio and video recordings of musical examples presented in class and indicated for self-listening, additional literature on the subject, sheet music examples) from the pandemic are collected on the Classroom site, in a tab dedicated to the lecture on the Outline of the history of Polish music from the 18th to the 19th century. Students receive a link at the beginning of each semester course with an invitation to the Classroom, which is active until the end of the corrective examination session for a given semester.
