Master’s Seminar 3106-SEMMGR-PMMP
This master's seminar is designed for musicology students interested in issues related to, amongst other things:
- the psychology of music
- musical acoustics
- the sociology of music
- psychoacoustics
- music therapy
- the role of music in a cultural context,
as well as
- aspects of the history, theory and aesthetics of Polish and international popular music (pop, rock, jazz, film, hip-hop and others)
- film music
- the anthropology of music
- song studies
Other areas falling within the scope of systematic musicology may also be included.
The seminar is open to second-cycle students in their first and second years. If students wish to count the seminar as a requirement for the ’Master’s Seminar II’ course, they must decide to do so by the middle of the winter semester.

Learning outcomes
Research methodology in the field of so-called systematic musicology, with particular emphasis on the areas outlined in the main description.
Preparing a literature review.
Mastering the skills required to write an academic paper.
Preparing a Master’s thesis.
Assessment criteria
- selection and development of a topic,
- reading of the assigned texts (exploring the topic)
- individual research (expanding on the topic)
- preparation of a presentation on the preliminary findings of the research and an outline of further steps.
- preparation of the paper.
If the course is taken as “Seminar II”, the paper should be approximately 8–10 pages long. (The same procedure applies to both the summer and winter semesters).
If a decision is made, approved by the seminar tutors, to prepare a dissertation as part of the seminar, the subsequent stages of the work are spread out over time, and the presentation and preparation of the written form relate to intermediate stages (outline, subsequent chapters).
