Music in ancient times 3106-MWS-W
The lecture is devoted to the music of various ancient cultures of the world. Particular emphasis is placed on the tradition of European antiquity in the context of Mediterranean cultures and civilisations, but sources for the knowledge of ancient Chinese music will also be presented, as well as music monuments of selected cultures of the Americas (Central and South America) and their interpretations. Questions of research methods and issues of directions and possibilities of interpreting sources will also be addressed.
In the course of the lectures the topics will be presented:
1. sources for the study of music of antiquity
2. The earliest traces of human musical activity - a chronological overview
3. Music and the gods
4. The sonority of the cosmos
5. Considerations on the effect of music on man
6. Sound and sound systems - theoretical concepts and practice
7. Notation and the discovery of the content of musical monuments
8. Archaeomusicology - reconstructions
9. Contemporary examples of reviving ancient music.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student:
- has an in-depth and structured knowledge of the types of sources for the study of music of antiquity, knows how to indicate their examples;
- is familiar with the time and place of occurrence of selected musical cultures of antiquity, and knows how to indicate their most important features and achievements.
Assessment criteria
Written colloquium on lecture and reading material.
