Term 2026Z:
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the role of music in theatrical and paratheatrical practices within traditional European and non-European cultures. In particular, the following topics will be discussed: 1. The role of music as a ‘sound mask’ in dramatised ritual activities – a model-based approach. With examples of ritual elements from Central Andean and Polish traditions; 2. The dramatisation and musicalisation of therapeutic activities – the tarantella as an example of a possession dance; 3. War dances from around the world – from mythology (e.g. the dance of the Curetes protecting Zeus), through traditions preserved in folklore (e.g. the zbójnicki dance), to stadium theatre (e.g. the haka in New Zealand rugby matches); 4. The multi-layered nature of expression in flamenco – Carlos Saura’s musical film "Carmen" |
